How big structure could you build in space out of known substances (steel, titanium, etc) before the structure would collapse on itself?
I'm wondering how big structures could mankind construct in space. Be it space station or space vessel. When does the weight of the construction start to be a problem? Could we build habitats and space stations spanning miles or even dozens of miles? What is the limiting factor (not counting the procurement and logistics - only the actual construction and size of it)?
