My 17 year old friend just got engaged to her 16 year old boyfriend and she doesn't know how to tell her mom. Any suggestions?

my friend really loves her boyfriend and I know that they would be awesome at being married and stuff, but her mom thinks she too young to even be dating. now she really wants to tell her parents that she's engaged, but doesn't know how. any ideas?

They're not engaged. If they were engaged they'd be getting married soon, which means they're financially and emotionally independent. They're not capable of starting a life independent of their parents, so they're not really engaged. However, they might "promise" to each other.

I suggest they put off the marriage until both of them are at least 18. 17 is not too young to date. It is too young to marry. If they are committed enough to each other to marry, they are committed enough to wait. And, they should.

Tell your friend to take it slow try to tell her mom when she's in a better mood and try to tell her when she has so many things in her head and she just can't concentrate that should work and her mother would know and not understand.

I'll second Quester's comment ...

If she isn't mature enough to tell her mom ... she isn't mature enough to be "engaged".

chances are they won't make it past high school. so I wouldn't worry about to much. there are only a small number of people who do and in order for it to work, or any marriage, you need to be financially responsible for yourself and mature enough to commit yourself that way.

Ahhh, puppy love, isn't it so sweet? As her friend you've gotta talk some sense into her. Tell her to finish college and get a serious job first, of course by then this boy will be a story you'll look back on and laugh.

I would wait make it a promise for now and when they have some experience living together then think of marriage. High school will make or break there relationship if it lasts then consider telling her mom

Oh shoot ? Well they are in a pickle... Here just tell her to sit her parents down and say "Look, I have something to tell you. My boyfriend asked me to marry him, and i said yes. I love him a lot, but I also wanted to tell you, because I love you too." She can add more, but its better to tell now than later, or else it will all explode into one giant mess.

It takes more than 'love' to commit to a marriage. As important as love is in a relationship, there are some very important and fundamental factors of a marriage to be put into place before they can become independent.. to start out on their own and start a family. At 16 .. just how do they intend to do THAT? .. or are they even thinking that far ahead? .. or are they thinking they can just sit back an let either social services support them or depend on their parents to continue to support them?

No education ... no job .. nothing to offer each other in terms of financial support .. LOVE can not pay rent, buy food or support a new family. WHAT are they thinking!

If she can't get serious about it and tell her mother than it's not real
First if you can't tell your parents your not a adult you got to build up the courage and tell them even if it hard
Second I agree with the other commenters talk since into her convince her to finish school
My grandparents got married at 16 but times were different
Now you need to go and attend college and get a stable job and support your self before you support 2 people or face the larger bills
