Why do people say they are Christian when they haven't even read the bible?

Why would you sign a contract you have not read?

Report as

Unfortunately, it's all too often a case of 'Christian see, Christian do'. The very same way a child will pretend to enjoy an activity or food selection that their family or friends are partaking in. A virtual bandwagoned tornado of blissful ignorance and socialization is the result. Leaving destruction, blind stupidity, malformed morality, and whining religious fundamentalism in it's wake.

That is totally ignorant and wrong. Yes it is signing a contract. Imagine all of Germany in modern day claimed that they currently support the Nazi party. Yes, I could. You support a tyrannical and hateful system promoting discrimination and pushing the dhimmitude of Non-Christians. Of course there is no way you can understand that unless you read the bible.
Report as
I've read the bible, multiple times, and no way is that a message taught to Christians.

You're pushing an atheist agenda with this question, one based on misinformation and blatant lies.

How dispicable, seething. I know you have this idea that Christians are somehow evil, which is absurd on its face, but that doesn't make it true. Just your opinion. You should be big enough to understand that your take on reality is just as messed up as anyone elses and is no more authentic than what I know.

Actually, I should be asking you, why do atheists hate Christianity so much when they have never read the bible and actually TRIED to understand the entire gospel message?

Meh.
Report as
I hate Christianity for its fruit ex. An entire majority population that disagrees with my perspective on sexuality, abortion, charity and facts. I don't think Christians are evil, I just don't like the message. You bully girls into celibacy, you take away there reproductive rights, you push welfare out of the political equation and deny evolution. To top it all off Christians fight regularly to put atheists in second class citizenship.

I am big enough to realize the messed upness of my view but I've become a vessel for self preservation and counter propaganda because an army of Christians are chanting on my door step that I don't deserve rights or even my life.

I understand the bible but like Christians, I ignore the parts that don't suit me. No human is my enemy, but only the ideas they might present. Christianity as a whole has become the vessel for which my destruction or suffering is wrought and so it goes. If you think I don't regret the way things turned out you are wrong, I like some things about Christianity quite a lot but you have been unwilling to compromise despite the polite asking by atheists for many years. We now recognize that the cross has no interest in peace with us, but a sword. Until our demands are met, we march on.
Report as
Pretty hypocritical, ExNihilo. Considering that every time you've ever spoken about atheists it's lies and Christian propaganda.

And by the way- there is no "atheist agenda". We have nothing in common but lack of belief in gods. Seething is technically an antitheist, which you folks love to fallaciously equate with atheism in general when in actuality it is rare.

So pot and kettle.
Report as
@see. What is your opinion on sexuality, abortion and charity, that people disagree with or whatever. I don't think I've read your opinion.
Report as
Tamayuki- I believe in sexual liberty, that there should be little to no restrictions with exception to forcible rape or sexual mutilation. That marriage should be no requirement for fornication or other acts. I believe that welfare is fine and that we should pay taxes to feed the poor- not just feed them in churches so you can proselytize to them and then vote down laws that would feed them through government programs like a bunch of hypocrites. I believe in science on the topic of abortion, that a thinking feeling human is not developed until week 28. I don't like that churches propagate contrary opinions, it really pisses me off.
Report as
Ok. I would love to agree but I look at things from a Christian view. On the matter of different sexualities, you clearly haven't read the bible either like your question asked because there are plenty of verses in the Old Testament and the New Testament that disagree with all sorts of sexual immorality. If you want I can show you the 2 that come to mind in the new cause I figure the Old Testament doesn't mean anything to you. As for abortion. You believe that they aren't alive but are aware that you could easily be wrong. I mean if you're wrong, you find out that you supported genocide... If I'm wrong then irresponsible women are slightly inconvenienced. I mean what right do they have committing in sexual acts if they weren't willing to accept any outcome that comes with it... They don't even have to keep the kid... Adoption is much better than killing them...in the case of rape. It happens... It wouldn't if this planet wasn't filled with so many baby killers and those who aid them in their crime. The church is suppose to take care of orphans and rape victims... Abortion just makes people trust in the government over God and let's them think murder is ok if it's out of inconvenience.
Report as
I was advocating your "sexual immorality" and saying I disagree wth the bible. Also I think its no ones business who your lover is- male female or trans. I say this because I'm pretty sure you misunderstood me. I don't like you people telling teenage girls they should be celibate, all it does is confuse them and then I have to nullify indoctrination before I get it in. Worst of all some girls really are waiting for marriage- it sickens me.

You are wrong about abortion. The social implications of banning abortion are torrential. I'll only mention the obvious one that is countries where it is banned- it is more common and maternal fatality rates are exponentially higher for the dangerous nature of unprofessionalism. The only thing banning abortion accomplishes is killing mothers. In addition, you people don't have to participate if you disrespect science but ironically the most common people to get abortions, are Christians. Maybe that is what bothers you. You are also misusing the word and context of genocide, I would know- its my favorite word.
We have every right to commit sexual acts and abortion IS one of those outcomes sometimes. I am a firm advocate for birth control though and I do see reasons it should be handed out in fifth grade-12.
I also think adoption is a fine option.

What would you define as read the bible. Do you mean all of it. Because its not important to read all of it it's just a personal choice that most everyone should take up. However I know alot but read little. There's verses for reading it and others for listening to it. I myself have read more of the bible than every other book combined and I still haven't read much... I'm not a big fan of reading. However it's not a matter of how much you've read or heard it a matter of how much you've applied to your life because of your Love for Jesus.

Did I say that? No. I said there is a time for reading and a time for hearing. When my pastor reads a verse I check it. In 5 different translations. And check the context of the verse. But just reading is how 3 of my "friends" turned away. They thought that knowing what it says can save them. They never were the type to discus or group learn. Faith comes through hearing. Can't go very long without atleast 1 sermon 1 class discussion and 1 time of praise and worship per week. I start to lose my mind and become depressed at the same time... A day without prayer is unthinkable... And I get twitchy without having God be my focus. Like alot of the time you'll find me either in bed outside or doing something/nothing and I'm singing praises or hymns or dancing. My Facebook conversations are almost always about something bible ish... I don't think I got every one of my weird tendencies... My only passion and intent is to out-Love Jesus. I want to show him up to him. I know I can't but I will Love him more than he thinks I can even if it takes forever!

Wow! d'u really spend that much time checking a verse in 5 diff. translations?

I mean why spend so much time with this religion stuff? aren't u ok with ur practical life?
Report as
So much? It bugs me how little I pray and serve and sacrifice. I am ashamed of how wasteful of my time I tend to be... I want to always be in the presence of God. I have breathing problems and so air probably mean more to me than you... Hanging out with God I've been able to to breathe perfectly and it feels like fresh cold outdoors air. Or the feeling of your heart on the verge of melting out of Love for him. Having your whole body slide in a rhythm from just him wanting to dance with you. Dude I get that only every week. It's like trying to survive off of just one breath for a week... I've decided for my mental health I'll bump it to to during the winter. I have SAD and I'm trying things and it might mainly be I'm not getting enough of God. SAD usually makes me depressed because I'm not around people and its cold and I'm down but that melts away at church I've noticed. And I came up with this new battle plan one Sunday and I heard someone speak in tongues and someone else interpreted it and it said "why don't you come and visit me more? I'm not only in this building I will only live in your hearts. I feel like you don't want me on every day except Sunday... I want to be with you and in such cold times such as these we should really be together. Come see me here, come see me while you're at home, come see me at work. It doesn't matter just you and me need to be together." That was given 5 minutes after I wrote down "maybe I should come more during winter..." While praying it. And if you think that can be faked let it be known that those to people don't know me and were like on the other corners of the room from me.

Then why call your self Christian if Christ is not your god? Clearly the god you worship is more tolerant and superior- I respect gods that don't promote hatred like Christ does, you should give your self more credit than calling your self a Christian. That is like calling your self a Nazi because you are German. Not all Germans are nazi's and not all believers are Christian.

The same way everyone else does. Has every satanist read their Bible? Has every scientologist read every science book? Has every doctor read all medical books?

Helpful (1) Fun Thanks for voting Comments (8)
Report as
Those religious people would be guilty as well but you do not need to read a book on astronomy to be a doctor. I should hope a doctor has read all the necessary medical books before practicing though- that would be a serious crime otherwise. btw scientologists don't respect science so thats an ineffective point.

What we are talking about is a contract though when we talk about religion. A contract with a clear set of terms and outcomes. This is no different than a legal contract except that you can argue religious contracts are just fantasy.

With respect to science, you can't argue with natural law. Jump off a cliff and face gravity- you don't need to read a physics book to get that but you do need to read the bible to understand what gods message and character are and what he would expect of you.
Report as
That's not how Christianity works. There's no contract. Simply Jesus died so my sins would be forgiven. As long as I accept that I get to go to heaven. It really is that simple but "Christian" fanatics try to complicate it with rules and judge others. Yes the bible tries to teach us to be better but regardless of how I live my life nothing I do earns my way to heaven.
Report as
Scientologists have nothing to do with science, by the way.
Report as
Well I wouldn't know I'm christian. I was just giving examples...every religion has hypocrites.
Report as
You realize that getting something by doing something else is a form of
contract.

Of course the fact that Christians believe whether you are a good and moral person has nothing to do with whether you get rewarded or punished in the "afterlife" is part of the reason the belief system is so immoral. Guy rapes and murders a few children, but is really sorry about it and "accepts Jesus"- apparently that deserves eternal reward. Different guy is a kind. loving, charitable human his whole life but happens to be Hindu? Apparently that deserves eternal punishment. Horridly inhuman and unethical belief system.
Report as
That's the wonderful thing about forgiveness!
Report as
That's REPULSIVE. To claim that a rapist and murderer deserves eternal paradise while a moral person who happened to be born in India and is thus a Hindu deserves eternal torture is immoral in the extreme.

While we should read the Bible its not a requirement for Christianity. Those of us who are able to do so have no exvuse not to do so. BUT the one and only requirement is to believe in and follow God/Christ. This can occure when someone tells a person about God. Those who cant read, are mentally or physically incapable of reading or have no access to a Bible or one in their language or are too young to understand the Bible, can obviously still become Christians. The early christians didnt HAVE a full bible like we do now and most of them couldnt read anyhow. They went to meets and listened to people talk about God instead.
In this world now there are many Christians who cannot read or do not have access to a Bible. That does not mean they arent Christian.
Your western upper class educated arrogance in this question is one of those dangers we Christians must be aware of. Yes reading the Bible is important but its a LONG ways from being a requirement for knowing God. There are ways to know Him without ever laying eyes or hands on a Bible. WE are one of those ways, which is why God told us to minister to all nations, to reach and teach all those about God who may or may not ever have access to a Bible.
I became a Christian at age five, i know that beyond any doubt, yet i couldnt read much beyond 'See Jane run, see Spot run' at that age. There werent easy read childrens Bibles at that time. But I still asked God to be part of my life at that time and He did so. Didnt read the Bible myself until quite a few years later.

I dont see the problem. If someone lies to you its a lie. Gods presence wont be there. I read Jane and Peter too. My mother spoke of God from an early age, but at some point a child is going to ask about death as they fear losing their parents, and their parents come up with God as if thats a simple concept. Its not. Bring religion into it and it becomes more complicated. We were told that jesus loved us and died for our sins. I never got that, i just felt bad for being a dinner and not knowing what id fone wrong.

When i saw jesus nailed to a cross and his father did that because he loved us, i was afraid i stood conflicted. God is a great way to control; the fear of god, the love of god. I went to church, thinking i cant trust my own mind they tell me my thoughts are wrong. So i did what it says trust an adult rather than yourself.

Im so glad i read the bible cover to cover a number of times as an adult. I also read historical relevance. Even as an adult I was scared god would punish me but i did it anyway, because i thought a dishonest belief was worse than an honest unbelief. And im glad because I freed myself from the damaging afgects of religious indoctrine. I dont hate people for their belief, but if the God of any religion is the best humanity can come up with then we are all screwed. A God to explain our existance is gonna have to be far superior to anything religion has come up with because theres not any love in that. If you think thats me hating you, then as i have said that is your problem, my opposing view does not come from hating anyone.

I don't think a Christian needs to read the Bible. A Christian is a person who believes in god and believes Jesus died for their sins, so they follow Jesus and worship him. You are describing an oddity which is also true of Americans having not read their own Constitution. Or owners of a TV or car not having read their owners manual. We want to drive, not read; we want to vote, not teach; we want to watch TV, not read boring parts. So sometimes, we just jump into the doing of something without reading all about it, like how I played Monopoly as a kid without reading the instructions.

There were no church of england children, no muslim children that was in the minds of adults not ours. Adults steal that childhood innocence and replace it with fear and brainwashing. Their actions segregate us in assembly halls, and turn us into divided adults. Is that love?

@Kathy; Your last three sentences illustrate the modus operandi and crime of religion. Bigotry is the square root of ignorance. - John Fugelsang

Reading the Bible might be contra-indicated for anybody who wants to remain a believer..

Far from being "the word of God" it's such a mishmash of inanities and impossibilities, that young Christians must become very adept at dodging and weaving if they want to stay strong in their faith.

Hence the use of "interpretation" and "distraction" from an older church member Dodgy.

When I was young I read the preface to the RC's "Douay" translation. It promised great reductions off purgatory for Catholics who read their Bible every day but warned that individual Christians were not to interpret it for themselves, that was the province of the Church.

Yeah, right. I'd put my brain on hold and allow that to happen?

I actually favor the idea of more nonchristians in the world, not that I don't respect a Christians right to believe what they want or worship Jesus, I just tend to agree with honest atheists more often. But it bothers me when nonchristians just claim that they are Christian and completely misrepresent who they are, what that religion is about and bury everyone else in confusion for it. I have a Christian friend who is very clear about what he believes and then I have a whisky tango(white trash) friend that just muttles around the idea but acts like she is a village whore. I feel the least she could do is just admit she is completely ignorant of Christianity and be done with it but instead its like she holds a cross up just so people wont look down on her.

Well, I favor the idea of more honest christians, true christians, people that are christians and know what it means to be.

We do agree that honest people are better. People should definitely tell the truth about wh they are

The bible is not a contract, it is a love letter from God. And simply hearing from some one else, the love letter God gave us, The Lord will work through that. Do you really think that someone who has never read the bible, to just wake up one morning and decide they want to read it? Without, at least, ever hearing about from someone else? Of coarse not. Also, Christians. Be not only hearers of the word but doers also. God said to go out and do the job we were told to do. Telling others of Christ.

A love letter? Really? All the murder in the Bible was a loving expression of God? As to your last statement; The God of Israel and many other religions never said anything about Jesus Christ.

I have to be christian, my parents are. Just because I haven't read the bible it doesn't mean that i'm not christian. I find your question slightly offensive.
