In Oz a college has less status and offers fewer courses than a University.
But the big difference is that "university" is such a difficult word to rhyme. Sure, you can do it if you try, but check out this line from an Australian country song: "He was just as full of knowledge As a forty acre college..."
A forty acre university just wouldn't have sounded right.
In the US the terms are used interchangeably, but in most cases..a university offers Post-graduate degree programs while colleges don't. There are exceptions though..some schools keep the name "college" out of tradition even though they offer those programs as well.
