The survival instinct is inherent in humans. We have the same well known "Fight or flight" characteristics as other species. We want to survive.
I sometimes think that, in very competitive people, this reflex kicks in and at their basest levels they equate winning with survival and it becomes a driving need . . . telling them "It's just a game!" seems to have no meaning once engaged in their need to be the last one standing . . . . (Championships and Premierships mean just that, to survive and prevail as the last one on the field of battle).
As long as you're not a poor sport, where you absolutely *have* to win everything, it's fine to be competitive. Actually, it can be a good thing, if it motivates you to do better. (Just don't start tearing other people down.)
