Has anyone ever read the short story or seen the film on YT called, "The Lottery" (Shirley Jackson)? When it was published it shook up ...

a lot of people (published in The New Yorker magazine in 1948). The author of "The Hunger Games" has often been accused of plagiarizing this story - they do look similar. If you search YouTube you can see the short film or find the story on the net - it's considered a classic in that it is hard to define what the underlying message is: every year, in a small Mid-Western farming town, the entire population assembles to play the lottery. The head of the town then calls out a winner - and it's really weird what the win gets you (no spoilers). I'm curious if anyone ever read the story or saw the film - what's your take on the real meaning of the story?

I read the short story. From what I have heard of The Hunger Games, it does not sound like plagiarism to me. Some similarity in a plot device, that's all.

I saw the film in my sociology class when I was in collage. I have not read the hunger games books so I can't compare the two but (to give away the movie) I think it was just the towns way of limiting its growth.

Jackson was interviewed after getting a lot of hate mail. She was shocked that this short story affected readers so powerfully. Critics have analyzed the story - there are a lot of interpretations - the consensus was that Jackson was exploring "mob mentality" which is a kind of "controlled mass hysteria" - medically it's been connected with "conversion disorder" - the herd is superstitious - they believe that human sacrifice in the Spring will give them a great harvest in the fall. Herd mentality has been found in different settings - certain religious rituals as well as politics - Hitler used this phenomenon to turn a nation into psychopathic killers.

Hi Cereb-well...I listened to the story on YouTube . It was really good. I'd like to get my hands on a copy of the story itself so I could analyze it more. It does have a similar tone to The Hunger Games, but it seems every story can almost be related somehow to another as there are just so many plots in the human condition. I really appreciate being made aware of this story so thank you for posting it. How would I find the written story itself?

The other two comments are still there)
