What is the best thing to do for a sprained ankle?

I somehow sprained my ankle sometimes yesterday, and today it's nearly impossible to walk on. I've been putting ice on it for 15 minutes and then repeating after 45 minutes, but is there anything else I can do? Thanks in advance for any answers!

Keep your foot elevated. Wrap in an ace bandage. Also switch to heat. Cold only helps the first day.

I've had my ankle sprained before, alot actually. My dad as a military officer says that you have to keep it elevated, switching ice every fifteen minutes. If you keep it on for longer, it will actually hurt you more. Imagine it freezing your ankle. After my first switch, my mother made me get up and walk around, though I hobbled and it didn't feel any good. It stopped all the pain after about three days, four days tops... It will hurt for a while, I wouldn't suggest walking around and putting much pressure on it though. Maybe I can just handle the pain more...

Basically, don't keep the ice on for more then fifteen minutes, love :)
