Why is the Republican Party (founded in 1854) called the "Grand Old Party" if it is younger than the Democratic Party (founded in 1792)?

Report as

The republican party was formed due to a split in the democrat party. The separatists felt that the democrat party was no longer reflecting the ideals of the founders, they modeled the new party around Jefferson's democratic-republican party. The slang "grand old party" or GOP came about as a reference to these claimed roots.
