In the 50's and 60's television shows often had only one or two sponsors instead of a variety of commercials and products. These shows aired during the afternoon when the children were either back at school (after lunch) or the little ones were napping. Housewives would do the laundry, ironing and other chores while watching these shows and the sponsors were mostly detergent/soap companies who knew their audience were women.
The pace of the Soaps were also designed to be very slow so that if women had to leave the room or were distracted by the kids, they wouldn't miss too much and could catch up quickly.
