Whole range of problems with Xbox Live chat and Turtle Beach headset, please help?

First of all, I can only hear voice chat while the chat cable (cable connecting remote with headset) is unplugged; if it is plugged in, I can't hear any voice. Obviously I can only talk while the chat cable is plugged in, and as I previously mentioned, that leaves me unable to hear voice.
Next thing, the volume of the already limited voice that does manage to go through while the cable is unplugged is dependent on game volume. So, if I want to hear voices at a volume higher than a faint whisper, my eardrums get blown out by intense game volume.

If you know anything about this / have a similar issue, please help! Thanks.

Xbox sucks and turtle beaches are for kids still living with their parents. Man up and get a kick ass surround sound with a sub and reciever. Now that's call of duty my friend besides the cost is near the same

I do still live with my parents because I'm still in high school, and I don't exactly have a huge budget when you subtract the costs of the new console and the new CoD. That is why I'm searching for a possible D.I.Y fix rather than just buying all new stuff.
