In the end it can actually save quit a lot of money. I did not like it when I had to do it but I guess I have to admit it was probably a good idea. In the real world you must dress appropriately if you want to succeed and fit in, perhaps it is good training.

I think that uniforms are a bad idea. GIVE US A DRESS CODE, NOT A UNIFORM!

Dress codes can be just as "stifling"-- my school had a very strict one. No skirts higher than 2" above the knee, no heels higher than 2", shirts had to be button-down, guys had to wear nice slacks & a tie, girls could wear dress pants or a skirt. Blazers or sweaters were optional. It was hard to find things that were "cute" that fit the code, but it was good practice for being an adult and requiring to wear professional attire. Uniforms do the same thing, but cost less money <3

It's like going to school in Red China. Who gives the right to any organization to take any ones individuality away? Especially when the american tax payers are paying their salary.

i think uniforms should be for elementary kids and not high school students because in high school you have your own style while elementary children are still learning who they are

Love them! They are both functional and budget-wise. And it provides a dress code that doesn't define students as the haves and the have nots. Most of the cons seem to be from kids who whine about losing their individuality, but they need to realize that it is their personalities in which we all differ - not our "threads."

The stated reason for mandating school uniforms is to improve test scores. Surveys show a very slight positive effect on test scores (see here: http://www.gate.net/~rwms/UniformBrunRock.html)
From a sociological standpoint, there is a rationale for uniforms. There is very little that is more obviously divisive along income and racial lines than styles of dress in teens. Some school districts have deemed it important to equalize as much as possible by mandating uniforms. It does not seem to have improved test scores much, and it hasn't improved some other metrics, but if you are in an area with big divisions of income or race...
