A chord is simply more than one note played simultaneously, or broken up in an arpeggio. Technically, any combination of notes on any instrument or group of instruments can be a chord, but most of the chords used in Western music are built on triads, which are three-note chords containing a root note, a third, and a fifth (ex. A-C-E, B-D-F, C-E-G, C-Eb-G, etc.).
