Inevitably, in going about our daily lives ? commuting, sheltering our families, eating ? each of us contributes to the greenhouse gas emissions that are causing climate change. That is your personal carbon footprint.

A cute name for the carbon dioxide that you release into the air by burning fossil fuels. It includes stuff you don't see, like petroleum used to produce the consumer goods you buy, or coal burned to produce electricity for your home.

Your footprint is the mess you leave on earth by the products and energy you use. You can make your footprint smaller by reusing plastics and driving less. Using less electricity and recycling. Etc.
