Why don't a lot of people believe in Jesus or Christianity

It seems odd to me to believe only what one sees, since no one actually lives their lives that way and that seeing proves to be very deceiving in unexpected way. It seems to stand to reason that it's only by first having a believing posture that one can learn anything. Disbelieving by default leads no knowledge and foist is a negation of knowledge, not an encourager of it. Scientists would ever get anywhere if they FIRST didn't have a spark of belief to even try and know something of the universe. If want evidence of say Jesus or God, then u first have to be open and stop rejecting the evidence that is there. I only encourage people to be open. The evidence for Santa Clause stacks against it, God is not Santa Clause. That may illustrate that u don't believe, but it is in way a valid argument against God. In fact it is that the fallacy of "false analogy". Perhaps u know what I mean, idk.

Science doesn't work by first having a spark of belief. First, there is observed evidence. Then the evidence is tested. Then an explanation of the evidence is offered. That explanation is then tested to eventually become a scientific theory.

prayer isn't scientifically accepted. and yet many people accept it anyways. when someone says they are a witch it doesn't mean the green skinned wart- nosed old bat you see in cartoons. a witch has always been a human who practices witchcraft. when you practice witch craft you do not take the devil inside of you. don't take your cartoons seriously raveneven. witches as a people are real. and its not a seperate race its just a practice. like if someone says your christian, buddhist, etc. just add witch to the list

I don't understand why people don't believe in Jesus, because all of us didn't just pop up out of nowhere. Science had nothing to do with it, of course god created it. But people have those unanswerable questions that absolutely no one can answer. Well those are just things that our human minds can't even comprehend. Because all we know is there is a beginning and ending to everything we have on earth and god doesn't ever have a beginning nor ending.

The experience wasn't real to them cause there home life didn't reflect what's being taught. There are more reasons, I believe this to be main two. Fact, there was a man name Jesus Christ. Fact, they cannot find Christ body in the tomb. The argument there is that tomb wasn't were He was. Our culture pushes the opposite of God.

It is not a fact that your Jesus existed. There isn't a shred of primary historical evidence. Also- "Christ" was a title not a name.
It is not a fact that there was "no body in the tomb", because you can't illustrate that there was a body in the first place or a tomb for a Jesus.

No evidence.

There is no contemporary historical evidence that Jesus even existed, much less the outlandish stories the Gospel accounts attribute to him (which were written many decades later by people never there). While it is possible that a Yeshua ben Yosef (yeah, Josh, son of Joe, real uncommon name) may have wandered around Judea at the time, the likelihood that he was anything more than one of the dozens of itinerant Jewish preachers common then is miniscule- not a single Roman, Jew, historian, or scholar in the area at the time ever wrote a peep about him and the tales attributed to him are far too like older mythological themes of the region.

Further, there is no evidence any gods exist at all, much less the Abrahamic variant.

Well I can accept that YOU find there is no reason, but that is a far cry from "absolutely no reason". There are a host of reasons...that u either don't know of or conclude to be false or rationalize away. I can't say which of course. It seems u choose set your historical knowledge up against the vast majority of respective historians on the subject. Now that fact aside, u must reject the historical persons of Socrates or say Alexander the Great since there is massive more historical evidence for the religious figure of Jesus than either of them combined! Lol....that's why I couldn't help comment "say what?!" U don't even have to take Christian, Jewish or
Muslim peoples biased word for it, u can pick a wonderful atheist NT scholar such as Bart Ehrman to help. For what it's worth....
Report as
I've read Bart Ehrman and he offers no evidence that Jesus existed either. Just some unvarified tenuous mention of family members mentioned in the bible. He assumes that trivial details mean; it must be true.
Report as
Raven, well we might as well call into question the whole of historical research and trivialize the entire endeavor of considering real anything that ever happened in the past since the evidence u seem to demand at best offers what is happening "now". Which even then where u are where I am are mere insignificant slivers of direct empirical experience. Now that's probably taking your position to hyperbole, but as I said earlier. I sure hope u don't consider Socrates or Alexander the Great as real and significant historical characters if u flick Jesus from all the history books.

Taking my position to hyperbole?
Yes, I assumed you were being humorously irrational.
Which is fine, but positing equavelency in the historic evidence between Alexander and Jesus is absurdly ridiculous.

I find it amusing that the majority of the answers are put out by those who do believe in Christianity. in general I find your interpretation of my lack of belief in your religion laughable, wrong, and not a little bit showing bigotry.

from a person who was raised in a Christian religion and then decided to not pursue it in my adult life (namely me) - the reason I ignore religion is because when ever one requires me to hand over money and power with out sufficient reason why, it turns out to be a scam.

if God exists then how I live my life is between us and no one else including organized religion. if a church wants me to follow thier rules and take away my choices on how to live my life while at the same time requiring money from me, they are gonna have to do better than 'God told me and you just have to believe that '

secondly the faith part. I have spent the hours of prayer looking for the voice of God or the holy ghost. instead I found my own conscience. which I am most happy to follow.

last the Christian churches have a very long, bloody, and hanieous track record of violence, oppression, hatred, and inhumane acts all behind the pretence of 'God says so and as I hurt you its with gods love ' I find the hyprocacy to be too much to bear.

in all I am perfectly happy living my life by my own conscience and the golden rule.

Because it lacks sufficient evidence, logic, or reason. Believing in Christianity is NOT a human's "default" position - by default, we are all atheists. Therefore believers have something called the BURDEN OF PROOF - this means that they have to do the explaining, not the non believers. The question is how and why anyone could actually believe in anything in the Bible, NOT why so many people reject it. The Bible is rejected so often because of the painfully obvious reasons to anyone who hasn't been completely brainwashed and who is capable of critical thinking.

Report as
The validity of the truth of God has nothing to do with the chronology of when people begin to believe. That's absurd. If God is real then he predates ALL positions regarding his existence. The "burden of proof" lies on ANYONE who make a truth claim wether in the positive or in the negative. The notion that people are default atheists is unfalsifiable since we don't have a pre rational conscious base to draw data from to support that claim. In others words, no remembers the infancy stage. Lol
That is a irrelevant point anyways, since in reality the majority of people do in fact believe in Jesus in se way besides being some idealized fictional character.
Report as
In other words- you're desperately trying to avoid the fact that you can't back up your claim that your god exists.
Report as
freedomlover - I don't care.
Trans - You misunderstand. My point about our default atheism was not my proof of why no one should believe in god. I brought that up ONLY because the person who asked this question seemed to have had the assumption that we all must automatically believe in a god, which is far from the truth. So my bringing that up WAS relevent in the context of this specific question.
But just for the record, we aren't just atheists by default as infants. If we were not exposed to religion, we would remain atheists by default for the rest of our lives. My point had nothing to do with what you just brought up. Yes many people believe in Jesus just like many people believe in Muhammad.
You're completely wrong to insinuate ATHEISTS have the burden of proof. Hardly. For one, that's impossible because you can't proof a negative in the first place. The best "proof" we have is that there is no reason whatsoever to believe in a god. The burden of proof cannot lie on BOTH sides - only ONE, and it's YOURS. Your burden of proof, plain and simple. The fact that there is no evidence for your god AT ALL is enough reason to believe it does not exist. For this same reason, fairies and unicorns don't exist either. It will never be my burden to prove fairies AREN'T real.
Report as
Geek,
If your talking to me, God's reality could never hinge upon me or my ability to "back up" such a claim. My claim is that I believe that God is true and that I have reasons for that belief. I do not pretend to think that that is adequate for u or that u will necessarily understand at this point in time. I only offer an invitation to all to join in the supreme journey of seeking God. I am a contingent and finite person as I believe u to be as well.

The vast majority of American atheists used to be Christian- study is why we're not any longer. Without evidence, there is no more reason to seek your god than any of the other thousands of gods mankind has worshiped over the millennia.

my friend is a city girl and was raised right. Here mother taught her to be a Christian and showed her the Bible. The Bible is one of the best and most accurate historical texts in history and has predicted future events like the United States and the Mayan Calendar. It's obviously a God-inspired book, so why do people find it hard to believe that JESUS is not the Son of God?

The Bible is God-inspired, so those who don't follow Jesus will be in the Lake of Fire detailed in the Book of Revelation. Why can't people just accept JESUS and be saved? I want them to save their souls.

What are you thoughts? In my opinion, it has to be this liberal agenda.

There are many reasons I suppose. Some have never even heard of Jesus, but I believe the scripture allows for God's grace to extend to anyone who's heart is open to believe what is true and that there is the Absolute Truth. Some don't believe because they listen to perspectives that start with doubt, misinformation and conspiracy theory of a grand scale. Some hold such a ridiculously standard of "proof" that they may as well not believe that u or I exist. Some don't believe because of the many inconsistencies seen in the history of the Christian church. Some may rather not believe so they can live as narcissistic selves, seduced by the lure of being their own ends unto themselves as though they aren't contingent upon anything. Some don't believe because they were told Jesus was just a man only or was never a real person at all....just whatever smart sounding person told them. There are probably many more reasons...I don't claim to know them all!

The same reason why you do not believe in Zeus or in Paganism!! If you can figure out why you do not believe in the above in Pagan Gods and all other Non-Christian Gods, you will instantly understand why the Non-Christian believers do not believe in your Christian Gods.

As for the Atheists or Agnostics, they simply do not believe three more Gods than you probably do. Therefore the difference between a Christian and an Atheist is only in the fact that the Atheists rejects just three more Gods than the Christians does. Because there is no more evidence of the truth of Jesus or Christianity, than there is of Philosopher's Stone or of Magic Wand.

There is yet another reason. Credulity of belief is not a virtue; and honesty of unbelief is not a vice. After all, whose fault is it that your God is not smart enough to advertise? If your God was it who made the Bible and my brain, whose fault is it if God's Bible and my Brain cannot agree? Think about it!!

@GeekModo, How can you meet a "mythical atheist"? And why would I use false information to prove my answer? Sure you do, but you will get actual facts from me. You really can't admit that you were incorrect in this debate can you? I have actually met an atheist who have had the same reasons not to believe in Jesus that I have listed. I can easily prove it, but it wouldn't be necessary. You, on the other hand, cannot disprove that I have not and cannot disprove that the reasons I have listed are actual reasons why some people do not believe in Jesus.
Report as
Bl... This hardly qualifies as a lost debate. You made a broad statement about what "some people believe" being unbelievers. We are two atheists saying we've never heard a single atheists confirm what you say. But now you say that you have met, one. I think we can conclude; there isn't an atheist demographic that represents your reasons for not believing, although you may have met,... one.

Report as
@ravenevan, You can see in my answer and comments that I was not referring to just one atheist whom I've met. In my fifth comment, that so-called "one" was just used as an example of the many out there.

Nowadays, Jesus' body is said to have been buried near the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. This church was built at a later time. However, his body is definitely is in Jerusalem.
Report as
The thing is there aren't "many" out there. The fact that neither raven nor I (and I am very active in my local organizations) have never even heard of it shows it is either a weird anomaly of a couple random people you met or you made it up.
Report as
@GeekModo, What is the point in me making it up? Just to look good? Just to confirm, I have. You and ravenevan just haven't met them regardless of the fact that you are "very active in your local organizations". Again, just because you haven't met one does not mean they do not exist.
Report as
You are missing the entire point here. You answered a question that was very general with ridiculous examples that exist in such a tiny fraction of atheists that widely knowledgeable atheists have never even heard of it.

That you did so indicates either complete ignorance on your part of what actual atheists think and believe, or that you were purposefully making an implication about atheists in general that is nowhere near true.
Report as
@GeekModo, You just said in your comment that the type of atheists I've met exist in such a tiny fraction of atheists. You admit they exist. Yet again, just because you haven't met one does not mean they do not exist. You haven't met every atheist in the world, and certainly not the ones I've met.
Report as
I'm still wondering where Jesus's body is that you say we can look at in Jerusalem. I was an Orthodox christisn for 15 years and I can tell you that the whole point of the Church of the HOLY Sepulchre is to celebrate that his body is, not, there, but resurrected, ascended to heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. That's what christians believe, and that's what is celebrated there every Easter. If the body of Jesus were still laying dead in Jerusalem, there couldn't be any Christianity.
Report as
@ravenevan, I said his body is said to have been buried NEAR the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. And that's why Christianity is a religion of much confusion. Jesus was a human being like everyone else. His body did not "ascend to heaven", it lies where it was buried. No where else.
Report as
No, I didn't admit they exist. I have only your claim that this handful of people exist. Which again, I doubt because I hate to break it to you but atheism isn't just about the Abrahamic religions. No one is an atheist because they reject Christianity- it's not the only game in town.

AGAIN, if you were basing your comment on this tiny contingent of a few people you met, you shouldn't have answered the question, or at least qualified it as "I met a couple of people who..."
Doing otherwise made it clear you were attempting to project your personal anecdote about a person onto the millions and millions of atheists.
Report as
@GeekModo, thabookguy asked a question and didn't specify whether you should exclude your personal experiences or not. Do I really have to meet every atheist in the world to make a claim? Or at least to give an answer? If you don't agree with my answer, that's on you.
Report as
No one claims a body is still there to visit. As you said.
And, by the way, there is no evidence that Jesus ever existed.

And that was in spite of the fact that "the long-suffering God waited..." He held the door open until the very last minute!!! And then, after Jesus's death, burial, and Resurrection...Paul tell us in 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12, " And with all deceivableness of the unrighteousness in them that perish; ...(the unrighteousness of the unbelievers causes them to be easily deceived, why?..... because they liked their unrighteousness)..., and received not the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness." There are so few believers in what Jesus did on the Cross because when they heard the truth, they didn't believe it, they liked their unrighteousness better, and that caused God to send a "strong delusion" or a spirit that...somehow...convinces them even further that they are correct in their position of unbelief! Thank you for your question, bye!

Romans 1: 18-25 "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all unGODliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the TRUTH in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for GOD HATH SHOWED IT unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are CLEARLY SEEN, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; SO THAT THEY ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were they thankful; but BECAME VAIN IN THEIR IMAGINATIONS, and THEIR FOOLISH HEARTS WERE DARKENED. PROFESSING THEMSELVES TO BE WISE, THEY BECAME FOOLS....Who CHANGED THE TRUTH OF GOD INTO A LIE, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever, Amen!"

Of all the people in the world, it's ridiculous to believe that only Noah and his family were worthy of being saved. Give me a break, Noah started as a child, surely someone had to teach him about god.

So, lying about atheists again.

Beth, you do realize the bible is not an accurate source for what atheists believe and why? It's more than somewhat biased and supports slaughtering unbelievers.

A lot of people do. But it's not entirely their fault, most never had a choice.
