What is the easiest way to quit smoking?

I don't smoke, but I know people that do and I would love to help them.

Report as

I smoked for 46 years. Then I had two close friends (smokers) die of lung cancer.
And then I went on the nicotine patch for a couple months.
I haven't smoked in more than 3 years now.

what is nicotine patch bro ..... ?
Report as
It's a patch that you stick on your skin, that gives you a small dose of nicotine that gets absorbed into your bloodstream. That way, you don't have the physical craving. You keep going to patches with less and less nicotine, and after a while you stop using the patch.

Drinking heavily can be just as bad for your health as smoking. You will end up with cirrhosis of the liver, and need a transplant to save you.

Report as
I also quit using the nicotine patches. They really do work. However, You still have to beat the psycological part. Which is the same with all bad habbits.
Report as
Nicotine patches are sold in any drug store in the US. They do not require a prescription.
Report as
Minimize!...minimize smoking first before you can really forget about it. Take it as usual for few days, then take it less than the usual times you took it for a day, and lesser, and lesser, and least for the following days. Then, there will be no more cigarettes you can take for the next more days to come. Overcome it little by little.

The person has to be willing to quit, if they don't want to then it's going to be hard to convince them..you could try and show them the disgusting truths, like pictures of smokers lungs, teeth and other things. Or give them facts about people who smoke and what happens to them. Hope I helped

I smoked 4 packs of camels a day. Quitting was the hardest think I ever did. But it was worth it. I didn't want to quit. My friend challenged me to quit for 6 weeks. I didn't want to but was stubborn. She was obnoxius. After 6 weeks of misery I decided I didn't want to go back. I could smell and taste things. It took me over a year to get over the urge to smoke. I haven't smoked in many years. She still smokes.

stop buying cigarettes for yourself, go cold turkey, go into a sauna, do it frequently and spend about 30 min. to an hr. in there; you will sweat out the nicotine which is the chemical that makes your body crave cigarettes.

Well, you can quite by slowly decreasing the amount that you smoke until you get to not smoking at all. Or you can quit by simply not smoking at all. That's cold turkey. It's a lot more difficult to quit cold turkey, but I feel like it's the best way out of it.

Chantix is deadly, both to you and others. STAY AWAY FROM IT!
The anti-smoking medication Varenicline (Chantix), affects the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, which helps reduce craving for smoking. Unfortunately, it’s 18 times more likely to be linked with violence compared to other drugs — by comparison, that number for Xyban is 3.9 and just 1.9 for nicotine replacement.

High Suicide-Violence Rates From Chantix Left Out of Safety Reviews
http://bit.ly/1aeDFl5
"Chantix, approved in 2006, is speedily becoming today’s most dangerous drug. In the later part of 2010 it was reported first among fatalities, twice as many as any other drug. Mr. Moore, an expert witness in court cases regarding Chantix says it’s the “riskiest drug among those analysed from the FDA’s adverse event reports.”
Serious problems — such as people killing themselves, trying to kill themselves, depression and unprovoked attacks on others — were mixed among 26,000 records of non-serious side effects such as nausea and rashes dating back to 2006, the year Chantix, or varenicline, was approved.

Cases of 150 suicides, more than doubling those previously known, were among 589 delayed reports of severe issues uncovered in new analysis by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP).
Thomas J Moore, the senior scientist who analysed the data for the non-profit ISMP, said: ‘It’s really chilling. This [Chantix] seems to unleash something in people. It can be violence to anything around...’
Report as
Observer, I can vouch for what you are saying. I worked on a hotline phone for an attorney's office that handled lawsuits arising from Chantix and the stories I heard totally support your statement. I cannot understand why the FDA allow it to be sold at all. It is deadly, and even if you quit smoking, it can be the end of life as you know it with regard to your family, job, and friends. Do not use this drug people!

When I began, packs were like 49 cents, when I quit cartons were about $10....hell, I see packs at over $4 so I hate to know what cartons run these days. Most smokers already know that it's unhealthy, expensive, a nasty habit, that we're socially unacceptable to most people that don't smoke; we've seen the films and the heartache from a close friend or family member that passed because of smoking. Smoking is an addiction for some and that's why we have such a hard time quitting. Rest assured, we have probably tried to quit yet failed many times. We keep trying. Our doctors tell us to stop, we're tired of standing across streets from where we work (or not getting a job at all because we smoke or have smoked recently), tired of standing in the heat and rain. Cold turkey works for some, chantix, the patch, e-cigs also help. Some people are strong willed and can quit from that alone. What I can tell you is if you are truly set on trying to help someone, what doesn't work is nagging them. We've all heard it 1,000 times and more, over and over again. Included are people who clearly see us smoking outside yet come close just so they can mutter "ugh" when they pass by or wave invisible smoke as they pass by. That's just another way of nagging us. I hope they don't have any bad habits.

I smoked for 20 years...one day I decided I had enough shortness of breath just from walking to the mailbox. I quit by carrying a pack of cigarettes with me but not carrying a lighter or matches. When I got the urge I took one out and pretend smoked it...without lighting it. Do this a few days and it will help rid your body of nicotine while satisfying the physical habit. You have to want to quit, no gum or drugs or hypnosis will help until you are ready to give it up.

Smoke your last one and never touch them again. Suck it up. Your body will lose the physical addiction within 3 days or less depending on the person. The mental addiction never entirely goes away but it gets easier with time. Eventually you will not want them anymore. The coughing will stop and food will taste better. You will have more energy then ever before. The patches and pills and the gum are just a waste of time and money. They just postpone the inevitable. Your mind will eventually change if you want to quit bad enough. Cigarettes actually taste awful. The nicotine addicted brain fools you into thinking that they taste good so you will light up. When the physical addiction wears off, it is all in your head after that. It was the hardest thing my wife and I have ever done but it is so worth it. In 2 months it will be 2 years.

My mother smoked for 27 years. Had a back pain, went to the doctor: xrays and then biopsy. Cancer, lymph gland. First the doctor said "a year" then it was "six months" and then it was "better celebrate Christmas early". It was three months from the time we found out to the day she died. Cigarettes did not taste good (mentally) after the biopsy. She just stopped. And the other smokers on her hospital floor? None of them wanted a cigarette, either. No one ever thinks it's going to be them..... and when you are looking at death it all seems stupid and avoidable how you got there. Maybe you need to find some people that are "paying the price" and your probable future may be avoided?

I smoked for 30 year's and after my neighbor told me one day that i had woke him up coughing one morning when i had my deck door's open in the summer time. He told me that he was very concerned that if i continued to smoke that i would not be around to see my youngest son graduate. I began praying to God and asking him to give me the desire and will power to quit. I picked a date that was special to me and it was my baby brother whom had died birthday. I also chewed on the coffee stir straws that helped a ton and was not harmful to my teeth. and one more thing that sounds odd but did help was when i had the desire to have a cigarette i would hold my breath for 15 seconds and the desire for the cigarette was gone when i exhaled.I know everyone is different but if you truly have it in your head and commit to it and understand it only has as much control over you as you allow it to to have, you can beat this addiction and you will feel so much better! But the first thing is to ask God for help and he will help you if you help your self. God Bless and to each person whom wants to quit i pray for the desire and will power to over come this addiction. In the name of Jesus i pray...

I've heard from friends that going cold turkey is the only way, but I would gradually cut down. Figure out about how many cigarettes you smoke every day, on average. Take that number down one cigarette every three days until eventually you are down to zero. The key to your success will be how badly you really want to quit.

in my opinion ,it is so easy ,just you stop to buy cigarettes , and stop to go with people who may invite you on some cigarettes ,, and it will be finished from your life ,, it is an irritating habit in my opinion ,not an addictive one as many try to show it ,, just be confidential and you can dominate everything not just in your life but all around you ,,,,

Obviously you have no experience with addiction. Smoking cigarettes is more addictive than heroine. There are thousands of addictive chemicals that ar added to cigarettes to make you keep smoking. Not buying them doesn't work. You need to convince yourself that you want to be a non smoker. The electronic cigarette is a good way to start because every time yo use the device, it's one, less cigarette that you smoke. It takes determination and practice to finally be smoke free. If you don't give up hope, eventually you will meet your goals to becoming a non smoker. I still try every day to quit.

If you are smoking around a pack a day the best way to quit is cold turkey. As Fpike stated earlier you will get rid of all of the nicotine in your body within 72 hours. In that time try to do as many things that trigger your craving, ie drinking coffee or alcohol. because this is the time in which you will have the most will power to ignore the cravings. Something to remember is that by not smoking other drug interactions, like caffeine, will be stronger.

A way to help quit smoking is by thinking about all the good stuff that could happen if you didn't smoke, and all the bad stuff that will happen if you keep smoking.

eg: If you keep smoking, you can have very nasty diseases and if you quit, you will have more money for other things.

You can also go see specialists who can help you quit or simply see your GP.

Hope this can help.

I think smokers have smoking as a habit, so you can try helping them to find another habit, e.g. having some sugar when want to smoke or walking. Smokers need quick it as a habit with strong awareness of being far away of it. Turn to a professional doctor when smokers replies on smoking heavily, even hurting their health.

You have to convince yourself to quit. Think what is more important to you, your family, your health, job and/or your financial stability. We are all aware what cigarettes will do to you. I smoked for 33 years, quit twice and the last time, I asked God to help me quit and he did. it is very powerful. There are several ways to start you have to convince yourself. I can now smell people who smoke, it is stinky. To me the woman who smoke - does not smell a true lady.

Often the only time smokers take a deep breath is when taking a drag from a cig. Your body still wants those breaths and the only way it knows how to ask for them is with a craving for a smoke. Excercise is a big help too. Keeps good endorphins flowing in your body, helps with cravings and crankiness. And most importantly, commitment required! If your not committed nothing you do will help all that much. Put a picture of your child on your pack of smokes, a picture of that flat screen tv you want to buy on your fridge, a flyer for the XboxOne with $520=58 packs of cigarettes written on it. Whatever your motivation keep it foremost in your mind. Good luck!

I thought I was told that the electric cigarettes are even more expensive than the real thing? I guess if money is no object...
Report as
The electric cigarettes are not even a bit healthier. I don't like the idea of them because they cost money. Well all cigarettes do, but these cost way more. I heard that they are still a threat because then they'll get you in the mood to smoke a real one again, and again until.. that happens.

You must quit for yourself. It's a strong addiction. I smoked for 60 yrs and was on three different inhalers a day. Quit in feb 2013. No more inhalers. I did it for myself and no one else.

Go to the hospital, and stare into the face of a friend or family member after they've had half of their lung removed,....very motivating. Watching them wretch in pain, cause the drugs aren't strong enough is an extra. Months later, you can catch a friendly reminder when they can't seem to catch their breath.

The Truth is you cannot do it by yourself quitting smoking, there is no easyway to quit smoking. the only thing to do is Ask God..Read the Bible (Jeremiah 10:23) "O Lord, I Know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps". (James 4:7) "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you". All this scripture will help you to Quit Smoking. Fear God..and let God will guide you the true Pathway.

yes Our bible provides advice and it is suggested to pray. However to pray as stated in scripture "You are to pray with all your heart, MIND and soul" I believe that is correct. MIND means conscious and SUB-conscious and that is HOW it is achieved. see the book in my hand written by a believing christian Dr.

I smoked for 30 years, a pack a day and surprisingly the RX Chantix worked like magic to stop the nicotine withdrawal symptoms and I completely forgot about smoking until so much time had passed that I finally noticed I'd forgot about smoking and thought "This is great, I don't even miss it!" That was at least 3 years ago and given the cost of the habit I'm just very grateful. Who can afford $6.00 a pack or what is it now anyway?
I thought I'd tried every way there was including prayer but all that did was make me feel guilty which increased my feelings of withdrawal!

Glad it worked for you but Chantix is a perilous remedy, the highest violence-inducing drug, more than Prozac. Search this page for Chantix for my comments and submission.

Well, I quit when the biopsy came back positive. High grade invasive bladder cancer. And the two weeks in the hospital recovering from a 6 1/2 hour surgery gave me more time away from the smokes. Then during the course of chemotherapy, everything make me want to puke (even a drink of water) so I still didn't restart. Still alive, though. Just quit, dammit!

To be honest, i've smoked cigarettes and i'm only 14, but it was only because my Grandma died and i had to get some stress off of me. The way I quit was not thinking about cigarettes and just thinking of other good things besides my Grandma's death. R.I.P Gram 8/4/13

The most important thing is the will of the Smoker. Chewing gums and taking meds is okay, but determination is the main thing which boosts the ability of achieving your goal.
So smokers, trust yourselves... YOU CAN DO IT !!

I smoked for 24 years. One morning my husband and I were both out. We decided neither would buy any and we'd quit. I was miserable all day. When my husband came home I found he'd bought cigs right after leaving in the a.m. and had happily smoked all day. I was so angry with him I never smoked again. That was 24 years ago. The moral is: you must be REALLY motivated. :)

Throw away all the smoke, tobacco, they have and find something new that they are interested in. Like drinking soda, chewing gum and tell them about how dangerous smoke can be.

To get rid of one habit you have to indulge yourself fully into another habit which fantasies you a lot. Get yourself involved completely to Yoga, and other exercises. Smoking cannot be quit in a single day. But if you have a determination and will power, remember that no one can stop you to quit it

Smoking depletes the essential vitamins and minerals from the body. So if you want them to quit smoking then these nutrients must be replaced. You can prefer vitamin C supplements for this.
