How does one 'perform' a poem?

The talent show advisor for my school says I'm not allowed to recite my poem, I have to 'perform' it. Please help.

Perform a poem doesn't just mean to recite it with emotion; they're asking you to physically perform your poem. As in, they want you to act it out. They want to see hand movements and body gestures. If your poem is about hugging someone, for example, then you can hug yourself.

Memorize it or read it with emotion. That means you should practice reading your poem out loud beforehand. Don't just read the words, punctuate certain parts with changes in your voice, and speak louder and softer depending on the line.
