Can light bulbs work without the glass?

no because the glass contains a gas that glows when heated by the filament. I mean the filament would still get got hot and glow but it would just be a small wire that is red hot.

No... There are different kind of light bulbs. If you are talking about the incandescent light bulbs, then the glass is necessary to protect the red hot filament from reacting with oxygen. The glass forms a vacuum or contains inert gas. You can experiment it by carefully removing the glass while keeping the inside intact, and then plug it in. The bulb would shine for a few milliseconds and then the filament would be gone. However this is quite dangerous...
