There is no proof of the existence of a higher entity. That is why so many do not believe. That is also why the concept of faith exists. Mankind has always had the need to believe in something greater... And I stress the word need. When times are hard this need seems to be greater and belief offers comfort to those who suffer. Some need to believe because without belief the sense of despair would be unbearable. Best wishes in your searching.

so what your saying and correct me if im wrong. People dont want to be alone so if they believe in something or someone its easier to cope with whatever hardships they are going through?
Report as
Yes, we are oddly fearful of that which cannot be avoided. Some believe we are all ultimately alone. Faith in a higher being mitigates the anxiety and fear. I also want to add that sometimes we have such a profound experience that faith in something greater does not seem like a huge leap.

With the way things have gone in my life so far its hard to believe that there is someone who is all knowing and powerful. I feel like I have overcome all the adversity in my life through being positive and having support.from family and friends.

Oddly enuf, your point proves God exists. There's a reason people go to God when times are hard...God delivers. And people who vow they have it all together... When times get really hard God is the first one they call on.you can only deny him for so long !!!

i call that blind faith!

You see it your way, he sees it his way and I see it mine. I started by saying I could prove nothing. I am, however free to interpret my own reality as are you. I am much happier believing than not. If, in the end, I have been wrong, I will have been happy. Rather be happy than right.

"faith" is just that.you are putting your heart and mind into something that you believe has control over things. Whether it's 'true' or not is really a matter that will never be proven. Although miracles do happen, one could also call it luck.

Only proof is the followers of a jewish zombie that preach that he will rise again and that you talk to him telepathically and symbolically eat his flesh and call him master for forgiveness seem to think there is a god. Myself I feel we are here to live and die. Try to be great while you live and your death will be even greater.

You can't take a step or breath without seeing proof that God exists. But what interests me more is what do non believers believe brought life into existence. The stories are endless and baseless.

heres the thing i didnt intend for this to blow up like it has. Let me try rephrasin the question for you. In your heart of hearts what is it that makes you believe? I askes a question similar before and the.moderators removed it. My question was why is it that so many people on here include god as part of their answer. I saw a couple of questions on here that the answers blew my mind. Heres an example, why does my dog.eat his pooh? someone responded that they should pray about it. now with all the things that are going on in this world i would think that god has bigger priorites than a dog eating its pooh. Im not saying i dont believe im saying I struggle because to me its kind of like when uou tell your kids about santa. 1 person to take care of all of these people just sounds crazy to me.

i used to be an avid church goer. its not the message that drives me away its the people. in my experience the religious peopke were the first to judge and cast people out of their churches. Gay people being shunned because its a so called choice. its against god. Doesnt the bible say though shall not judge? sowhy are his followers the very first people to judge.
Report as
Twindaddy, I believe you're genuinely concerned. You're right about church people. They're our biggest test. It took me years to understand that people expect more of us than God. The relationship is very personal and very real and the benefits far outweigh the challenges. Just invite God and his endless love into your life and he'll come and you will never regret it. Peace !!!

i did go to church i went for years and years. My problem wasnt the message it was the followers. Who was always the first to cast out and judge others? It was the people that went to church. I tried several churches before I gave up all together. I got sick of people judging others. Gay couples getting banished from church because "its against god" Doesnt it say thou shall not judge?

That's not proof, that is circular logic, not proof. Not to belittle having children, but my dog had puppies, but I doubt she believes in god. But then again it never came up in our conversations.

What is inherently wrong with circular logic?
Report as
PS. The point is we cannot create kids or puppies, so who/what did? Intelligence does not evolve from a star going super nova. The intelligence was behind the super nova. That's okay, you can put the cart before the horse as long as you like.

You're going though a rough time in your life, but that doesn't mean God doesn't exist or doesn't hear your prayers. He gives us challenges to overcome, to test us, to teach us how to advance ourselves though our experiencesand mistakes and victories. The proof will be when you die and say *Oh, hello Jesus ... hey that whole 'giving sight to the blind' thing was pretty cool.*

Well one can define proof as they will. There is however, a huge amount of evidence. The problem is so many live their life as "seeing is believing". That's the biggest impediment. In reality it is "believing is seeing."

cookie is correct, as with the proof of god, this entire thread has shown that there is none, now on the subject of Jesus ( I really hate that name, as it is not his name) There is no historical evidence of him, NONE, I have tried many to show me credible evidence of him and they have not. Oh Joshepus, well a small paragraph about him written some 60 years after the fact is not credible. as well as the one that mentions him by name is higly suspect of forgery, by Eusebius an early church father that was notorious for forging. so show me some historical records prior to 70ce that mentions Jesus, not the movement (cult as it was refered to), just Him, his life his works. Now did he exist, perhaps, but not as the bible says, otherwise there would be much written about him and written near the time of his supposed death.

Do you see electricity , wind , a star in another galaxy ? Do you smell or see oxygen ? there are high frequencies and low frequencies of sounds and light we can't hear or see , may be because of that you don't see God , it's a bless from him that we can't see or hear everything , you would see angels or devils and that may frighten you , if you heard the screams of people in the graves or Hell who are being tortured that surely will panic you ,Moses has seen God , when he saw him he fell unconcious .Not everything you don't see , touch , hear , taste or smell doesn't exist

divotdaddy, It would take me more then this small comment box to explain that to you and you know that. Electircty is my job, I know where it comes from and how it is made, what it can do and cannot do, I know electriclal theory (notice that nasty word theory, because it is fact). Go outside and look up at the sky, that is supposedly only about 6000 years old, do you realize that the light from that star you're looking at, left that star over 1 million years ago, and as much as a few billion years ago?, It's a look back in time, before humankind, sometimes before even the earth itself existed. But the answer from samo was that you cannot see these things, yet they exist, and my comment was they are provable and there is evidence for them, not how they came about.

As we learn more and more, people see more and more that god is a fiction, invented out of ignorance and the hope for a better life after death.

Life is not too bad now for most of us. We don't need god, although there are many (see above) who cling to him out of ignorance and fear of the dark. Pity them.

As we are growing up we are told that invisible friends do not exist, only the adult invisible friend, referred to as god, we speak to him, yet he never speaks back to us, not directly anyway, I am told. I really see no difference between the concept of god and our children's invisible friends.

Report as
waldorff
Atheism is the absence of belief in an utterly preposterous set of ideas, which only those brainwashed from birth would think were reasonable.

Report as
I think that the reason "they can't explain it" comes from the fact you do not want to sit long enough to listen, it is much more complex then "From God, by God, or because of God".
Report as
Oh and I come from people that were very devout believers on God, I say were because they passed away years ago. so no we do not come from people that do not believe in God, most of us were raised christian or other relgion.
Report as
Maybe you are really rebelling against mommy and daddy and use atheism to give them a good gut wrenching worry for your soul.
Report as
wow thats not fair or even called for.
Report as
LOL, no I came to what I believe because I started researching religon, beliefs systems and the history of god. I found they are all just made up beliefs taken from older beliefs, just as christianity is, you may not think so but it is. the oldest current religon is not jeudeo-christian, but is actually Hindu and Janeism. Even Buddism is from Hindu, and BTW Hindu is the oldest Monotheistic religon (and I know I'm gonna get a no they have 1000's of gods) No they really do not, they have one almighty god called Brahman, he has a son that was sent to earth to save mankind, I forget if he became human or not, as in the case of Jesus, Baccus, Mithras, and Osris, but he has a simular story much older then those aforementioned gods.

My parents were somewhat religious, but very even about it. I rejected the whole thing after a long period of thought, when I was 15. I've reconsidered it several times since then, but it's all just nonsense - intellectual laziness.

And the guy who said atheists don't know what we believe in - that's a ridiculous assertion - how exactly do you come by it?
Report as
Well it took me a few years longer then that, I suppose my mid 20's, but I really never fully accepted the idea of God even early on. I really did do a lot of research on religion (beliefs and history of them), it was actually a facinating study, and actually still is, I just am not as active in it as I used to.

I think devotdaddy is just as I said does not want to listen long enough to hear what an athiest believes, I find most christians do not, as it is too complex. It is just so much simplier to say "God". and if you look at my answer a few above yours, he asked me to explain the universe, oxygen, electricty, and so forth in a small box. i suppose I could have just said God. :P

wow who would have thunk a simples question would have created such a discussion

Report as
Strangely enough, you cannot prove nothing exists, Imean god does not exist, therefore I cannot prove he does not exist, I can only refute the evidence or lack there-of that he does. divotdaddy, I do not spend 100% of my time studying about god, actually I spend very little. I got a huge interest in acient and midevil history, I found that it went hand in hand with christianity, so I ended up spemding much time researching it's history and origins. I also spent time researching other beliefs, Hindu, Buddism, Paganism (which is too large for any one person to comprehend), Zoroastrinism, Janeism. Islam, pretty much any religous path, I did some research on it, in a historical view. Amnd now I'm rambling LOL
Report as

Rambling interestingly though.. I was challenged to prove god doesn't exist in one question - I said as soon as the challenger proved Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy or Easter Bunny didn't exist, I'd be happy to. No response... Still thinking about it, I expect.

I sort of gave up on all religions - but VirginiaL started an interest in me in Buddhism, but that's as far as it's got so far... I guess I'm not meant to be spiritual.
Report as
If I were going to be religious I would be Buddist, they have no dieity, but i you want to believe in one then that ok too, they are a very accepting religion. Their goal is enlightenment, and every incarnation is another part of that path until you reach the point of full enlightenment, at which point you no longer reincarnate, They don't really care what you or anyone else believes.
