What are the benefits of a gluten-free diet?

I don't have Celiac disease or any allergy to wheat, rye, etc. but gluten- free products are becoming so popular and universally available. are there benefits to avoiding gluten even if I don't physically need to? is it just a trend or are there legitimate benefits? if so, what are they?

If you have celiac disease or have a wheat allergy you need a gluten-free diet, otherwise you do NOT. This is another white, rich, food-obsessed, body-obsessed peoples' diet. It is just another load of nonsense and marketing technique for the alternative woo industrial complex. Get lives people.

if you have crone's disease, I have heard you have fewer flare-ups if you avoid wheat, barley and rye gluten.
I have celiac disease and get very, very sick from eating these glutens.
I believe that if you do not have a disease or allergy to them, then eating them in moderation can be helpful to you

Celiac disease is a gluten allergy. Many people have a gluten sensitivity and benefit from a gluten free diet. I am a blood specialist and have 8 such patients in my practice, all we'll documented. There is tons of stuff about this in the medical literature so I would suggest that you are the dumb sh-t

LeeKovacsevics was not putting anyone who actually has Celiac disease down as fakes. I'm truely sorry you folks, above, have any kind of illness. But, I agree, that there are people out there that do become obessed with diets, like they get bored with ordinary stuff. What a waste of money and time for them.

Gluten is a protein like any other. Protein is the healthiest thing to eat.

You can actually find lots of delicious gluten free foods, including gluten free flour. Do not criticize and allow people to try it themselves and decide on their own. I, am a very happy gluten free eater.

A lot of people are sensitive to gluten. They get bloating diarrhoea fatigue. They also have trouble with absorption and can become deficient in iron or folic acid , causing anemia

Wheat is a grass. Ruminants, such as cows, eat grass. But they have four stomachs to digest it. People aren't built to eat grass.

Look around. The majority of the US population is overweight. I'm gluten-free and I lost my excess weight in weeks. And all I did was stop eating grass.

There are no health benefits to a gluten free diet, unless, you have celiac disease or some similar ailment that makes it a problem to eat gluten.
If it were a good thing for everyone, everything would be gluten free.
Don't fall into the food hype BS. If you don't have a confirmed problem, ignore the gluten free diet.

Everyone has to make their own decision of what is healthy for themselves. I have no health issues but decided to change to a Paleo way of eating. I recommend reading the MANY different diets (meaning what you eat, not to lose weight and then go back to your original eating habits) and decide what makes your body, mind, and spirit healthy.

being on a gluten-free diet is pretty horrible, but I do it because I need to breathe and my heart needs to not be held in a tight grasp and my intestines feel so bad and I don't like the emergency hospital trips associated with me eating gluten products. I have Celiac, however, I have been told by some who do not have Celiac that it does make them feel better as well. I have wondered if it was more because they are also removing genetically modified foods, toxins, and other things that are bad for the body from their diet than from going gluten-free.

Today's wheat has been heavy modified. Many have side effects from it and don't even know it. Things not thought of as coming from wheat consumption. A good book on this is Wheat Belly by William Davis, MD. See comments from Gurnzy's, who's friends reactions supports what this Dr. discovered. Wheat has been genetically modified and put on the market w/o testing. All in the name of having enough grain to keep people from starving.

All of you who say that gluten free is disgusting and that there are no benefits are very wrong. You can experiment with many different kinds of gluten free flours, my favorite being Bob's Red Mill gluten free flour. Eating gluten ups your chance greatly of getting cancer.Wheat Belly is a great book to read and after you read that, you won't want to eat gluten. So if you actually care about your health, drop the gluten.

A lot of the wheat we have now in the US is not heritage wheat, and is not good for human consumption. It is, however, good for huge agri-science's bottom line.
"A powerful little chemical in wheat known as ?wheat germ agglutinin? (WGA) which is largely responsible for many of wheat?s pervasive, and difficult to diagnose, ill effects. Researchers are now discovering that WGA in modern wheat is very different from ancient strains. Not only does WGA throw a monkey wrench into our assumptions about the primary causes of wheat intolerance, but due to the fact that WGA is found in highest concentrations in ?whole wheat,? including its supposedly superior sprouted form, it also pulls the rug out from under one of the health food industry?s favorite poster children."

More and more groceries and health food stores stock gluten-free products. That?s good news for people with celiac disease, who for health reasons should not eat wheat with gluten.

Yet paradoxically, most of the people who reach for gluten-free products don?t have celiac disease and or even a sensitivity to wheat, Peter H.R. Green, MD, director of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, told WebMD. "The market for gluten-free products is exploding. Why exactly we don?t know. Many people may just perceive that a gluten-free diet is healthier."

In fact, it isn?t. For people with celiac disease, a gluten-free diet is essential. But for others, "unless people are very careful, a gluten-free diet can lack vitamins, minerals, and fiber," says Green.
