Why did the US president sign gay right .

bible is againt it!

Report as

Separation of Church and State and the First Amendment, specifically the "Establishment Clause" which basically means that no religions get preferential treatment when it comes to creating laws. So essentially, what is said in the Bible, has no bearing on what sort of laws are passed in the US, especially since not everyone is Christian.

Some can read and understand.
A direct quote of the entire :
"Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
It says that 1) Congress can't make a law respecting an establishment of religion, or 2) forbidding the free exercise of religion. Some people can't seem to figure out that allowing homosexuality is not a state established religion so the first part is a mute point in this discussion. As for the second part, some may say that the government is going about trying to prevent an already established religion from its free exercise. But then others say that this the government's job now - to stick their nose into the individual citizen's business and try to relegate the original purpose of the Constitution to the scrap heap.
Report as
dkks -

1) the point is that to deny rights to those who are homosexual BASED on the bible, would be giving Christians preferential treatment. It would be saying that their religious views are more important than the individual civil rights of any human being.

2) no one is saying that Christians aren't free to exercise their religion. If they don't want to be gay, or marry gays within their churches, then more power to them. No one says that they have to.

3) the government wouldn't have to stick their noses in, if people actually did the right thing and themselves stopped trying to meddle around in everyone else's business, but unfortunately many of those people used their religious views to create laws specifically banning states from recognizing gay marriage. If they'd left well enough alone, then the Feds could have kept out of it. Gays having equal rights, does not take away rights from anyone else, so don't know why this is an issue at all. Two gay people getting married, does not suddenly invalidate my married, or make my marriage any less than it was.

The Bible has no bearing on US Govt policies, nor should it. The Dark Ages were over long ago. They were a dismal failure. In this country, we are guaranteed "freedom of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" which is not limited to those who choose to follow only a certain religious doctrine.

Homosexuality is not a choice. Sexuality is inborn.
Report as
Two identical twins are born.

One is heterosexual and the other is homosexual.
Report as
Identical twins a have a far higher incidence of both being homosexual than fraternal twins. This would not be true if homosexuality was a choice.
Report as
If its really genetic then every pair of identical twins would also share in their sexuality.

They do not.
Report as
Who said it's genetic? Gay children are born to straight parents all the time, and vice versa. And identical twins aren't clones.
Report as
There is NOT a gay gene.
Report as
So, bettyeckles, you are a molecular geneticist then? I mean, to make such an absolutist statement, I would expect you to work in AT THE VERY LEAST a sister field?

If barring that, then you have ready ALL of the research on the subject? Mind you, the actual research on the subject. NOT the regurgitated ravings of the talking heads or wanna-be reporters on biased websites.

You also have at the very least a 4 year degree in some area of biology to help you fully grasp all of that research?

If you answered "No" to any of those, then you have no foundation to interject your OPINION on, because that is all you would have... an uneducated opinion.

Now, I am not 100% sold, myself, on whether there is a "gay gene" (which is misleading as hell, anyway. If homosexuality does have a genetic factor, it would not express itself as a "single gay gene") or not. With that said, I also haven't explored all of the research on the subject. I, at least, know I do not have enough information to make an idiotic statement like "There is NOT a gay gene."
Report as
Report as
... did you even read the article you linked to, bettyeckles? It, uhm, kind of says EXACTLY what I just said. In fact, here is a quote for you...

"... there is a loose consensus among geneticists, if not social scientists (Butler 1990; Kitzinger 1995), that there is some evidence for a genetic predisposition to homosexuality (Kallmann 1952; Bailey et al. 1993; Risch et al. 1993; Ferveur et al. 1995; Hamer 1999; Rice et al. 1999a). There certainly is no single “gay gene”; the relative weak values for the heritability of sexuality clearly illustrate that if sexuality is indeed genetic, it depends on at least several genes... "

Secondly, as I stated above, this is just someone else regurgitating other studies. It is not the actual studies, themselves. If you cannot read a study for yourself, interpret the data accurately, and have a background that provides you with the necessary scientific foundation to understand it all... then you should NOT make absolutist statements on the subject. It just makes you look like an ignorant sheep.
Report as
important in policy and law. This article reviews the evidence that sexuality is biologically based and finds it inconclusive. It then examines the ramifications of a case where a well-studied gene is associated with gender nonconformity and lesbianism, which are treated as part of the pathology of the disorder. The article assesses the legal importance of the immutability of sexuality and considers examples where courts have conferred or denied lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights based upon scientific data. Lastly, the article argues that, given the evidence presented, rights for minorities should not rely on biological definitions
Report as
Bye.. Bye
Free to be you
Free to be me
Report as
... and how does ANY of that support your absolutist claim that "There is NOT a gay gene."?

It actually contradicts you, and states that there is a lot of evidence for there being a genetic relation to homosexuality... just not a conclusive one.

Considering all you did just there was quote the very first paragraph of the article, and seeing as how you apparently know nothing of what the article even says (Much less what the studies the article is quoting says), I am going to have to assume you didn't even bother to read THAT article... much less anything else about the subject.

You are right about one thing, though. We are done with this conversation. You have shown PLENTY of enough for me to dismiss your words as baseless and ignorant.

Betty has admitted before that she is "proud to be stupid". Don't expect too much.
Report as
Thank you Trusty
Report as
Homosexuality is a matter of epigenetics- not "having a gay gene".
Report as
You don't have to get testy with Betty. She is just sticking up for her own personal value system. Nothing to harm, Nothing to worry about. We ALL (including little olde Moi) have issues we feel near and dear to our hearts. Arguing who is right, and who is uptight only detracts from the overall picture.

Suffice it to say, we have different opinions, and we should respect each other for that. Who is right, who is wrong is relatively pointless. When a majority makes a decision, it is followed (right or wrong) Lighten up.
Report as
Sorry, we are talking about human rights here. We are talking about people being told their love is ugly and amoral. We are talking about young people killing themselves because they have been led to believe God sees them as abominations. We are talking about people sharing lives together only to watch their partner die and have no claim to any of the things they shared in life. And we are talking about people who have to spend their lives denied basic freedoms the majority of us see as a birthright. There is no "lightening up" about that, as far as I'm concerned, and, quite frankly, I see such a complacent attitude as the biggest part of the problem.
Report as
Excellent point, Rees. That is why we have the Bill of Rights, folks. To protect the minority from the whims of the majority, especially when it comes to civil rights. There indeed is no "lighten up" when in a discussion about the systemic denial of civil rights to a group of our countrymen.
Report as
My comment was specifically about betty. This is the exact same topic when discussing politics. I feel one way about Obama. You feel one way about Palin. The discussion is not about either one of them. (or Betty) But about how to have a discourse about this topic. Name calling, insults and brow beating do NOTHING to further any ones POV.
Report as
When people champion lies and ignorance that puts a segment of the population at a disadvantage, there is no equivocating. Stupid is stupid. It's not an insult if it is true. And you don't even need the mountains of evidence to see how stupid is the notion that people choose their sexuality. It's perceptually salient. All you need is a modicum of common sense and decency. The people who championed "separate but equal" were stupid. The people who thought women shouldn't vote were stupid. They may have been intelligent in other ways, but they held stupid beliefs, and possessing any intelligence only makes them more stupid to arrest their intelligence when it came to the are in which they chose stupidity.

Some people seem to think that allows them to twist it so they can force their prejudiced ideas on others, despite what it says.
