Dear JistJack,

Here you go...the Florida Softshell Turtle; very fast-moving, in water AND on land.

Hi JistJack and Kokinaw,

Yes, such a handsome fellow...I have been doing the space before-and-after bit for links, do you still need that, or did you and Yosey figure something out?
Report as
I had to chase that a bit further, Virginia, but they can run at about 15 mph.
Here's a video showing the thing running away.
The speed certainly surprised the guy with the camera.

15 miles per!
That video is really remarkable...turtle starts out like you might expect, slow moves...but then...such speed!

The fact that they are carrying a house (shell) on them it slows them down

They have to carry their shell around everywhere, and it may just be how they evolved

Wait, what? I don't understand
Report as
vbscript's activex component "Wscript.Shell"
Report as
if you create a text file with a .vbs extension and typed what is between the pounds (#) with notepad, saved it, and run it you will get a message that will disappear 14 seconds later or when you click yes or no or cancel which ever comes first.

I think those Slimy ones you are refering to are Slugs not turtles
Report as
No. I know were talking about turtles. I mean that the TURTLES could be slow cuz of the shell.
But the slugs and this other slimy one are slow but don't have a shell.
You get me?
Report as
what other slimy one you speak of.
Report as
I don't know what its called but is not a slug.

Best answer I've found says that turtles are slow because creatures don't usually have heavy armor and speed:
http://www.highlightskids.com/science-questions/why-are-turtles-and-snails-so-slow

Can you imagine a heavily armored, herbaceous, fast turtle? It would need a lot of food.... not something we'd think of as cute anymore....

Armadillos can run up to 30 miles per hour

Short legs, heavy armor to schlep around, and they're just not in any hurry. People should learn to slow down too!
