Was the action of Lot's wife towards Sodomah and Gomorrah on fire a sympathy to their citizens or defiance of God's instruction:)

Report as

Lot ran, his daughters close behind. "But his wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt" (Genesis 19:26). She lagged behind. She turned and watched the flaming sulfur fall from the sky, consuming everything she valued. Then it consumed her. The Hebrew for "looked back" means more than to glance over one's shoulder. It means to regard, to consider, to pay attention to. The Scriptures don't say whether her death was a punishment for valuing her old life so much that she hesitated in obeying, or if it was a simple consequence of her reluctance to leave her life quickly. Either she identified too much with the city-and joined it-or she neglected to fully obey God's warning and she died.

I don't think anyone knows for sure why she looked back but she did know she was directly defying God's instruction.

Eve knew she would surely die if she disobeyed God but was never instantly killed but Lot's wife did not know what would happen to her and was going to happen to the 2 cities. Instant death:(

They both knew the result of their actions before they disobeyed. God gave them warning and they both received the punishment they were warned about. It seems harsh but direct defiance is something God takes seriously.

The place that Lots wife killed was never meant to be a memorial - she perished as the result of God's judgment. Her body was reduced to ash and salt - That whole area is now salt - its not just one tiny pillar somewhere so we wouldn't expect to find one human shaped mound or anything. The bible warned that they would "be consumed."

I never knew the Lots had known the result. As for the wife no rewards were offered by Satan unlike in the case of Eve. 'Knowledge'. Why defy or was it sympathy?

Each time we see 'No trespassing. Trespassers shall be prosecuted' hardly anyone defies that.

The whole area is now salt?, have you visited the excavation site?

Hi olpaint
I know it is somewhere in the Middle East. Ever since I was a child I longed and still long to see the Holy land including this salty place. You mean Sodomah and Gomorrah are all salt or the spot where that Lady turned into pillar:)

Thanks.

But why did Lot’s wife look back? Was she curious about what was happening? Did she turn back because of disbelief or lack of faith? Or, rather, was hers a longing gaze for all the things that she had left behind in Sodom? (Luke 17:31) Whatever the reason for her looking back, she paid for her disobedient act with her life. Just think of it! She died the same day as those inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah. No wonder Jesus said: “Remember the wife of Lot”! While fleeing Sodom with her family, she had disobediently looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt.—Read Genesis 19:17, 26.

That was a woman who did not give an iota of objection when her husband offered her daughters to the wicked men in order to protect I do not know what of the angels. She looked back

Looking back or behind usually means regret. Lots wife didn't really want to leave. Besides God told her not to through the angels. She went against God.
.

Genesis 19:17
17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said , Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed .

I think, not to look back in empathy, would be callous, and inhuman. Job had shown what he was made of, by offering up his daughters. I wouldn't expect him to look back in concern.

Nature of the flesh.
Even the fleshy Jesus wished loudly something of the flesh while on the Cross but also being God he made a U-turn.

Thanks
