So I'm doing the rainbow fire project and I can't find out why the chemicals made the fire change color. Like for m i had some of the ingredients but they changed them mostly to green the fire. So i just wanted to know what made them change the fire into different colors? what ingredients in there made it change. the SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT IS ON SCIENCE BUDDIES

The amount of energy given off by the flame is what causes the different colors; energy is correlated to light wave frequency which determines what color our eyes see the fire as. Lower energy comes off as red and higher, blue.

When you burn something, the light you see is the electrons freaking out and then coming down from their excited state. Therefore, the color seen is dependent in the energy released during the excited atom state of each substance. Why this varies depends on the nature of the atoms.

It also has to do with the chemical composition of what is burning.
Different elements, hydrogen, helium, etc, burn at different temps, giving off different amounts of energy, and different colors.
Build a fire with some dry wood, and then throw a fresh cut (wet) piece of wood on the fire. Along with the hissing and pops of the water boiling out of it, the colors of the fire, will change based on the gases released from the wood.

Isn't that what I said. :O

Yes, of course, but I probably answered while you were editing your post, and didn't see the second part. If I had seen your edit, there would have been no need for me to post at all.

I always thought they changed colors due to heat. I would google it and find some articles on it. Good luck man
