Why does everyone like the hunger games?

I read the book, with an open mind and I was bored through out the whole book, and the movie, I couldn't even survive it. I just don't understand the appeal. Can anyone tell me why they like the story so much? And don't give me the 'because it's the best book every' I want a legit reason.

Being a hardcore Hunger Games fan myself, I think the reason a lot of people like it is because the idea of how it was created. I think it got its inspiration through Rome. The reason of this is because, In ancient Roman times (Imperial) Romans would get Christians --who were by Romans and throw them them in arenas where they would have to fight for their life. Rome is sometimes seen as utopian whereas the rest of the Empire wasn't living the same way similar to the Capitol and the Districts. So in a way these element were related to events that happened long ago in our world which I found very unique. Aside from that, people just like it because it was well executed story, with the plot, and it was much better than sitting through the entire Twilight movie. The books drew out Roman History, Greek Mythology, and War Stories. In the end the entire book/movie is just a dystopian world that feels foreign and unsettling. The story also drew things out in our world we live in, our world is a place where rich and poor live side by side by worlds apart. And just like the characters in the story, we question the choices a government makes in our behalf. And the government itself has been abused, damaged, and is being beyond in repair. The story has roots in our world, it's not that hard to imagine a path from here to there. But, honestly people like The Hunger Games... Because they just do, what's not to love.

Well why can't everyone just move to Canada so they don't have to fight in the hunger games? It's based in just America correct? Or did I miss somthing. And I would have felt more inclined to it if the author wrote about different individuals so you felt as if you didn't want anyone to die. Obviously the author wasn't going to kill off Katniss because it was written in her pov, so you know she survives the whole thing before the book even begins. How is that fun? I personally like to be kept on edge and wonder who is going to die next. For example: game of thrones.
Report as
Well it was actually more focused on the North America Region, not just USA. Moving to Canada wouldn't work, because you would have been dead in the first place. But, I see what your point is, I understand more of what you mean now. If the Hunger Games was written in a Omniscient Point of view, or Third Person Point of view, people would approach the story differently.
Report as
Yeah I would have enjoyed it so much more. The whole idea of the story was clever, just not written well in my opinion.

I love the books! Read them way before the movies came out, I'm kinda disappointing in the movies but honestly no movie can be as good as any book and at least its not as bad as the Persy Jackson movies god they're terrible compared to the book.

I agree I really didn't like the book. If you want a good book read " Between the shades of gray " and no it's not 50 shades of gray cause that book is horrible.

Because kids love to follow trends. If they did a remake of "Caligula", the worst movie ever filmed, and filled it with pretty face teen characters who sparkle, drink blood, turn into werewolves and zombies and foxes that nobody knows what it says, it'd be the biggest movie of that ... week.

Is that a good enough reason to like it though?
Report as
HeII no! It's garbage, I feel sorry for these kids, like mindless little robots taking their orders from Hollywood.
Report as
Uh. Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't see the appeal. This is what teenagers consider to be 'literature' these days!
Report as
I would see Caligula if an ugly man played him. I love history and hearing about the different emperors! It could be the worst movie ever, just put 'based on a true story' on the front page and I'm in!

That's why I watched it :-)

I refer the special on the history channel for that though xD

Finally. A real answer. But didn't you find it predictable? I mean, obviously Katniss is t going to die because it's written in her pov so that made the whole thing frivolous for me..
Report as
maybe a little but i dont know i just love books where the society. changes but its not that predictiable katniss doesnt die her sister. does no one would suspect that (sorry if i spoiled that for anyone)
Report as
I knew the sister would die after I read the first chapter. And I have never read any other book in the series nor was I aware that my suspicions were confirmed until you said that haha.

It taught me somthing! And in the same way i liked the adea of how the goverment wanted to kill
And she changed their plan!
So they wanna get payback and she still fights

She saved that guy who actually didnt care about her before

Its kinda nice

Plus i dont understand why everbosy like twilight? Its an even more fake movie than hunger games

I like Hunger Games, because it's something that can actually happen unlike Twilight.

Thats right
Lol
Report as
Yeah, it's different. But I feel the author could have written o whole lot better. Obviously Katniss isn't going to die and in a book about killing it kinda defeats the purpose and makes it boring.

I didn't like the book, but I thought it was a good book. That probably doesn't make sense. I mean, it was exciting. It was written well. It posed important moral questions. I read all three books and they were great. But I didn't like them. I'm glad I read them once, and now I'm never reading them again. It was so depressing it actually made me feel sick. Plus, I hate reading about death. But they were still good books; I just can't really explain how. It's really confusing. I don't know how you would be bored reading them, though.

I normally don't get into reading novels in the first place so I skipped to watching the first film. I like it because of the idea of the story: being set in the future of collapsed nations rebuilding civilization but in a corrupted way. There is no USA or Canada (as far as I know) but rather districts home to enslaved workers who provide goods and services to the capital city where the wealthy live. What also interests me is the lifestyles invented in the futuristic world such as the clothing and their source of entertainment like the bizarre talk show and the Hunger Games itself. Now I'm interested on how the characters are gonna change things for the better. Overall it's more of a 'rise against the corrupt' type thing. Much much better than the Twilight saga (which is catered to the hopeless romantics)

I liked it because it was different. A really good plotline for a book. Some of the parts could've been done better, but in my opinion, it was pretty good. They needed more blood in the movie.... And they needed to realize no one knew what the hell was going on unless you read the book lol.

Exactly! The actions scenes were horrible. The camera man just didn't hold still. That have me a headache :/
Report as
EXACTLY!!! And like half the freaking movie was a dang close up.
Report as
And the other half they weren't even fighting or doing anything. That pisses me off when something is supposed to be 'action packed' and ya wind up just sitting there for 40 minutes watching nothing pretty much.

you nailed it dude!

i liked it because a) there was a strong girl protagonist who didn't need any help from men(unlike Bella from twilight a.k.a the queen of sappiness! seriously that girl really need some classes of self defense no offense to twilight fans-sorry) b)it was quite unusual and the way Suzanne gave realistic touch simply awesome i mean not that romantic otherwise i would have gagged or too action(i wouldn't have minded that but then again too much action is only appealing in films) it was a really fun read but im disappointed by the ending its way rushed still book is better than movie i mean have you seen it?

Well, it might appeal to people because of the action- lots of death. Or the fact that it's set in a dystopian society and has a lot of cool things described. Of course, there the plot- children killing children( always a hit). I have to say that I really like the book and the movies- but other people may not agree. It's fine if you don't, not everyone finds death, fiction, or any other aspect of the book appealing. I like almost every book, but I liked the description in The Hunger Games. I also really liked the rebellion aspect and the themes that you can learn from it. In the movies, I liked the graphics, clothing, set, and the actors a lot- I found it interesting and both movies are one of my favorites.

The movie or the book? If the movie, people love the fact that everyone is fighting to the death. The book because, the book is very interesting and gives a LOT of details. It just gives people addiction. It's like tobacco. You cannot stop doing it.
