I used to have a German Shepherd mix who had skin problems and had to be bathed about every 6 weeks even though he didn't like having a bath. I made sure to use a good dog shampoo (not human shampoo or dish soap) so it cleaned his skin and coat with one application. I used puppy shampoo around his face so it wouldn't sting his eyes and made sure no water got in his ears. I washed his head last because a dog will not be able to resist the urge to shake once his head is wet. Use tepid water - not hot or cold. Make sure he's steady on his feet in the tub, either with a non-skid mat or a bath towel on the tub floor. I held up a big beach towel when it was time for him to shake off, then towel dried him pretty well. Once we were all done, I gave him a rawhide chew which was one of his favorite treats. (If I forgot, he would sit by the fridge and keep looking at the top of it, which is where I kept them, until I remembered.) All that said, are you sure your dog needs bathing? Not every dog does. The two I have now have each had exactly two baths in all the years I've had them and they don't smell "doggy" even when they get a little wet in rainy weather.
