Why do we get presents on Christmas?

Out of curiosity why do we get presents for Christmas? I mean Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. But somehow we started giving presents and I want to know why? The question has been asked quite a few times at my house and I really want to know why. My family has been doing it since they can remember but we don't know why.

Report as

Unlike prior answers, it has nothing to do with Magi.

When the early Christian church first took the Winter Solstice festival from the pagan traditions (a ploy to get converts) and grafted their "Jesus" story onto existing mythology, they kept many of the pagan traditions.
Giving gifts was originally a Roman tradition of Saturnalia. Pagan traditions are also why we decorate trees, use evergreen, holly, and mistletoe, feast, sing songs, and decorate with lights during the season.

Well, we can give to Him in other ways. (see my answer below, and the comment on my answer)
Anything we do for one another, as long as it is FOR God, we are doing it for Him. So I guess gift giving is just another way to show love for one another.
But like it says in the verses (see my comment on my answer), it is mentioning feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, and stuff like that, I think God is trying to tell us to give to those who NEED. Not want.

No I AM saying that Christmas is a Pagan holiday for the winter solstice.
That is what many people have told me.
Just like Easter is also. But celebrating Jesus's Birthday isn't, or celebrating Jesus's coming back to life isn't, either.
But if you don't believe in Jesus/God, then idk what you celebrate.
Report as
the people who dont believe in god just celebrate either because they dont know what the true meaning of the holiday is or its just another reason to celebrate because who doesnt like giving and getting presents and feasting! and ya pagans gave gifts and so did everyone else and Christianity has been here for ever so jack your wrong Christianity was here before pagans were.
Report as
HAHAHAHAHAHA, no, it hasn't. Christianity is a relatively new religion. Paganism, Judaism, and MANY, MANY other religions were here before Christianity was even a twinkle in John's eye. And Christmas isn't even a Christian holiday. Like I said, it's a Pagan tradition for the most part. Jesus was born in March, you ill advised child of evolution.

STOP arguing, it will get you NOWHERE. OK, you think one thing is true but not the other, BUT the other guy thinks that the thing you don't believe in is real. STOP fighting, it gets you NOWHERE, I have been there before.

Nowhere wouldn't be somewhere, so you'd have to be... erased from the multiverse to be there. So in that sense, your being here is an impossibility.
Report as
Hey JacknRum, I thought it was August that Jesus was born. And the pagan thing is totally correct and Christmas was started as a way to stimulate the economy and to convert pagans without them noticing. And the traditions we have during the holidays almost all come from different pagan practices. Ever wonder why we kiss under mistletoe? The christians would have heart failure if they knew!
Report as
Yeah, I thought it was August at first, too, but apparently it was in late March.

Report as
Um Christianity didn't start when Jesus was born it started long before and if you read the bible then you would know that God taught Adam and Eve and i don't think that he just said go be a pagan no that's when Christianity started and December 25 is just a time that we celebrate his birth we know it isn't actually when he was born.
Report as
And you are the ill advised child of evolution JackmRum
Report as
Dude, give me evidence suggesting Christianity started before Jesus was born. It started AFTER he DIED, because his Apostles decided to make a new religion based on his teachings. By the way, you just said that evolution is how humanity came about. "Child of evolution"? Dur?
Report as
no i didnt say that how it came about evolution does happen but we didnt come from apes but everything evolves but not to that extent

There is two schools of thought and the truth probably lies somewhere with the two combined. On the first Christmas the Three Wisemen travelled far to give gifts to Jesus and some believe it is to honor that tradition. Also during many Pagan winter solstice festivals gifts were exchanged, and as a way for the church to converted them they allowed many of the customs to follow but they gave them different meanings. Hence saying it is to honor the act of the wisemen.

Nor is it nice to try to tell people what to think. Besides, Christianity is a farce. If there is a "God" He/She would not tell people that He/She is the only/most powerful deity. It would just lay back and let things go the way they do. Can God be proven? No. Can evolution be proven? Yes. Plus, there are no false gods. If there is a single deity, who's to say people aren't just worshipping a single aspect of said god?

Big bang theory. Is that, a theory. Evolution is the same, a theory. And theories are unproven. To believe that life came from destruction(big bang) then one must have faith in that believe which is unproven. But to go back to your answer to the question above. Yes you are right. It has to do with pagan traditions which Christianity has within all its holidays. Also no one should get angry here when some states a act or there opinion.
Report as
Okay uh... Basketball?... STOP!!! Go out in the real world and make some friends there... Not on ask?.. ><
Report as
It's closer to being proven than spontaneous creation. Which isn't impossible, but HIGHLY unlikely. The only way to create something from nothing is with energy, and you can't have energy without substance, which can't be created out of nothing without energy.

The wise men took presents to Jesus but if you read in the bible it doesn't says they found him. Also the wise men did not give gifts to each other so the gift thing just represents a Christmas spirit which that spirit includes spending money that particular time of year. However biblically speaking you should give anytime of the year not particularly in December.

I hope you all start to believe because life is so much better with Christ! Not only that but all you have to do is ask Jesus into your heart right now and He will come in! It says in John 3:16"For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life(The Holy Bible).NIV Furthermore it says in Romans10:9"That if you confess in your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. It doesn't get any easier than that It's a simple step that opens a lifetime of love! I'm not gonna lie being a Christian is hard but there is something more than presents and of course our loving God wants us to be blessed! After you decide to take that step try to read your Bible to build a relationship with your Lord. It isn't a laundry list it is a building block and increase your faith with the One who can actually ever benefit your life entirely inside and out! Man and tradition will let you down but God never will! I'm not saying I get everything I want, but when I pray and ask God sure has blessed me "a social outcast" with what I have asked when people said I couldn't ask Him for that! I even have dysfunctional family flakey friendships and several failed relationships! Now I have a son and a husband whom God gave me because 13 years plus wait, but really what have you got to loose? Freedom to do whatever you want. You can still have freedom but once you grow with Christ you want to please Him and obey Him just like you want to bless not only your friends, family or boyfriends. The world is getting more and more wicked and man-holes are swallowing people major life events and economic failure's on the rise. That said what have got to loose by accepting Christ! Everyone lives, everyone dies! Do you really want to die without a true friend you can see who will always be there?!
Report as
Furthermore after the celebrated commercialism that of course gives us the "gimmees" there are empty boxes. Of course I believe in the three wisemen. And I 'm not naive that there is pagan traditions, but why not accept an eternal gift?! All you have to do is believe and confess, once you do that your heart and conscience will help and if you feel it's too hard to do all that ask God to help you because only He can for real!
Report as
God doesn't want you to don a penguin suit and slap you back with a braided leather strap and pace the floor like a crazy person He just wants you to accept Him! You don't have to pretend or judge! If you build a relationship with him you will open your heart. My Bible helps me and I sin everyday, but God always helps me and forgives me. He'll do the same for you!
Report as
AMEN, that is the best one yet, you should be a priest, I applaud you.
Report as
But, I'm an atheist. I rarely sin. I don't need forgiveness.

People who celebrate Christmas, but don't believe in Jesus, are just taking back what never should have been accepted as belonging to the Christian faith anyway. Enjoy the Winter Solstice, it is a magical time where the earth going around the sun, along with its tilt on its axis, causes seasons to change. In the case of the Winter Solstice, the seasons change for the better. Warmth will increase from this point on. Things will begin to grow shortly. People -- humans, and probably even protohumans before that -- always celebrated this blessed realization that the increasing darkness has stopped its advance and will now retreat.

I say "Cheers" to that! Others, blindly it seems, say "Merry Christmas".

The tradition at least partially originates in the fact the wise men brought gifts to Jesus when they found him. There are other gift giving traditions that also mix in to form the secular act of exchanging gifts.

Saint Noel (aka Saint Nicholas) was the Bishop of Myra, a no longer existing city in Greece, and was known to be very generous, especially to children. On Saint Noel's day, celebrated December 6th, Bishops traditionally give out small gifts to children. Many people adopted this custom into their families. In the 1800s, the tradition became a part of Christmas in protest of the Roman Catholic either by the Anglicans or Protestants. In the early 1900s, companies started Christmas advertising, which escalated; and that is how Christmas has become a commercialized holiday of gift giving.

Finally someone got it right! It is because it has been designated that on this night GOD gave us Christ Jesus (his gift to us), the sacrificial lamb, so that through his death and resurrection he could take away everyone's sins, and we can be forgiven, and it's by his stripes we are healed of all afflictions and deceases (another gift), and in giving us his son he showed us how much we are loved by him and by Christ Jesus too and so we show our loved ones how much they are loved by giving gifts to them.

Pagans did celebrated the winter solstice but they brought logs in for the Yule season. Early Romans celebrated a 12 day festival in mid-December. When the Roman leader changed the national religion to Catholicism (which means universal) bestowed upon them by the Roman leader - they didn't dream up this themselves) they celebrated the birth of Christ. Christian non-catholics forget that they are by-products of the original Christian religion-catholicism. About the 6th century a clergyman now known as St. Nicholas would bring/leave presents to the sick/poor. In the 19th Century Clement Clark Moore wrote the epic "A Visit from Saint Nicholas" (he never wrote a poem called the night before Christmas - that's the opening line. People who opposed the use of the terminology "Saint" adapted the first line as the title it would be like changing the "National Anthem" to the first line "Oh, say can you see..." Moore stated he had a sack full of toys from there the advertising giants ran away with it. Never forget the first gifts were to honor the Child born in Bethlehem (whatever the precise date was) which we accept as 12/25 unless someone can really "prove" otherwise - no theories!

That is a very insightful question. Looking up reliable research about the origin of the gift giving and how the actual celebration of Christmas came about will help you. It is also interesting to note that the Bible says Jesus did not receive the gifts from the Astrologers( Magi) until he was a " young child" who lived in a " house" ( Matthew 2:8-11). In later years the celebration of Christmas came to include giving of gifts to each other. A quote from the Encyclopedia American says " Saturnalia, a Roman feast celebrated in mid-December, provided the model for many of the merry-making customs of Christmas. From this celebration, for example, were derived the elaborate feasting, the giving of gifts, and the burning of candles.” The Encyclopedia Britannica notes that “all work and business were suspended” during Saturnalia."' Look up the information for yourself because it is good to know and understand the reason and background behind anything that you do.

The tradition started many years ago before any of us was born, but I believe that since it is Jesus' birthday and he told us to love one another, we are doing that by giving gifts. We do it in remembrance of the Wise Men, who brought the Lord gifts. This good spiritual thing has been turned into commercialized materialism in this country today. It is good that you are asking, though; that's very important to do when you sincerely want to know, and ask a real Christian, such as myself. We will kindly give you the answer. Also, you may be interested to know the significance of the Christmas tree. The triangular shape represents the Holy Trinity. The evergreen of the tree symbolizes Life. The star represents the Nativity star. The lights on the tree represent the Light of Christ. Even the candy cane has significance. The red stands for the stripes the Lord received for having been scourge for our sins. The white represents His purity. Advent is the 4 weeks preparing for the Lord's birth. I hope this all helps you appreciate Christmas much more. God bless....

We get presents to celebrate the birth of Jesus, because when he was born it was a gift to the world.

Because when Jesus was born three wise men came and gave him gifts so now we all give gifts to one another to remember that.

Gifting is an old pagan tradition which is actually less to do with pagan religion and more to do with the culture of hospitality and showing strength in feudal societies.

In pagan religions, there was no forgiveness, in fact it was believed you would suffer the sins of your fathers, and your children would suffer for your sins.

In a practical and real sense, making enemies could get you killed. And for these reasons, having a good reputation was all important. Your reputation was maintained by displays of positive character traits, especially hospitality and generosity.

This was so important that you put the most effort into hospitality and generosity towards your enemies.

It doesn't make much sense in our culture, but it stopped them killing each other and led to the custom of exchanging gifts.

St. Nick was just Nickolas at the time, gave to the needy by God's lead. That's one theory. I kind of enjoy it but as long as Christians remember the real reason for the season.

Well, I am a believer, and the three kings *or wise men* gave Baby Jesus gifts, Jesus is very important, and he also died on the cross for our sins, so he also gave us a gift.
