Why are people so easily offended now of days?

You could say "blue," and everyone would holler and hoot about how offended they are.
Not everyone but you catch my drift
Why is everyone crying wolf?
With the slightest word?

WildCat is correct. But also because people spoil their kids and make them think that the world revolves around them. They grow up to be weak, spoiled adults who can't handle any kind of criticism, not even constructive criticism.

Tony~ You must come out of your corner. You have children to raise and stars to collect. It is frowned upon when you leaves your stars all over your room. Someone might get hurt and poke their eye out by the sharp corners. Now, go pick up your stars. When you're finished, set the table please. Dinner is almost done.

And Bass4ever1995~ Where ever have you been? Out fishing again I presume? Well, go take off those waders in the garage, Plleeeaaassse go jump in the shower and be ready for dinner in an hour. Tony will be done collecting his stars and setting the table by then.

Don't forget... Tony sets,... you clear. Thank you, my dear.. NOW GO!! BE Gone with you both! :)

It is a matter of "know your audience." There are whole host of cultural differences that are polite in one corner of the world, but would be considered rude in another.

With tele-communications as global as it is, it is easy to offend somebody since the distances of culture are shrunk to milli-seconds.

because the world is growing more serious. People are trying to sensor more things. for instance, schools tossing books out because they dont want the younger generation to get any crazy ideas from it. everyone is on the defense 27/7 because in our world if you arent attacking someone, than someone is attacking you. my answer may be a far shot, but take it from someone who was drastically bullied when i was younger.

I've noticed that too, whiny butt-hurt people are so annoying, I guess it's for attention...true story, someone at Lowes started an argument with me because I said to my wife, "I'd get the black or white toaster, red doesn't go good with anything" and some guy about fought me for being racist?!

How is "red" an attack on Mexicans? If that's how he thinks then maybe HE'S the racist.

I've noticed that oftentimes those who are quick to accuse others are the ones who are guilty.

I have to be really careful here, but where I live see, they seem to be more racist than you and me.
They have a vendetta, Some do believe, we took California away from them. Little do they see, that we would not have done such a thing if they would cooperate and treat the land properly. It isn't about the toaster and your color scheme. It's about the caring for each person, animal, or thing. For you and I, we see beautiful land and the sky.. For Some Mexicans, it's breeding grounds: WE DON'T DIE WE MULTIPLY, You meant no harm with your comment to your wife. Red would remind you of blood and that is something all kitchens dread. !
The phone just rang, so I leave with a bang.
Don't let the color skin dictate the meaning within.
That last line went to the racist mexicans and whites and blacks. RELAX. Everyone relax and enjoy your time we are all in celebrating being alive. :) The PPHHHOOONEeeee.....

Most of the offenses to which I think you are referring happen due to one of two reasons: (1) a society which has progressively become less civil due to effects of anonymity in social media, and media portrayals of interpersonal conflict as entertainment, and (2) a political culture which has forgotten the merits of compromise, in part due to the effects of reason number one.

At the age of 64, I have seen society become less civil, and I do not think it is a coincident that the transformation coincided with social media and reality TV shows.

I would add that, although I have no statistics to back this up, term limits have tended to fill the ranks of our elected officials with younger members who have not had the time to hone their skills at effective diplomacy, and are replacing those who were in the trenches long enough to develop those skills.

@Shiny: I would be interested in reading such a chapter written by researchers who have determined the cause of declining civility -- or if it only seems to be declining by people like me who may be looking at the past through rose colored glasses.

Because alot of these people think they are "Victims"!!! It became worse after Obama was elected....Since he wants to make everyone "equal".... Alot of men have lost their backbones, too many women watching Oprah, ect...., and parents ignoring their children and having a computer babysit them. It all starts at home. I carry on, I DONT care who I offend if its the truth!!! Thats my right of freedom of speech.....Usually the people who are offended are the people you are speaking the truth about!!!

You see, that the incivility I have come to know as described in my answer. I remember a time that people did not speak the truth to someone's face out of deference to their feelings. Now people seem think they have the inalienable right to say to anyone regardless of how hurtful it is. You say what we have now is due to a lack of backbone. I say it is because people are too weak to hold it in like we used to. They just vomit out whatever is on their minds with no concern for the ramifications.

I don't know that the legitimate battles of the Civil Rights era didn't bleed into a sense of entitlement and taking of offense at the smallest imagined slight. If you never have an armistice, if you think that a battle must be continued even after the enemy has capitulated, you both miss the benefits of victory and the recognition of an end of the war. It leads to the taking of offense easily, as we may have won the war, but we forgot to disarm.

Report as
@Shiny: If you are talking about the war on racism which reached a peak with the Civil Rights era, that is war that has not been won.
Report as
What he's saying is that the general concensus is that we put racism down for good back in the 70's when we clearly have not. People associate the 70's with desegregation almost automatically.
Report as
caltex, ok, can you tell me what the current battles are? In other words, what should I be looking for in the civil rights area?
Report as
@Shiny: Civil rights provide for legal recourse, but it does not end racism. My wife sees it as a teacher where there are other teachers who automatically assume children of color will be attend trade school or will eventually drop out, and the white and Asian children will be going to colleges to move into white collar jobs, and that assumption is reflected in the time and resources spent with the children who they are unofficially tracking for college, and the ones they are unofficially tracking for trade schools. Racism has taken a significant hit over the last three decades, but it is still alive and well in many areas of this country.
Report as
I agree with you regarding the soft racism of low expectations, which is common in schools, especially public schools. In that sense, we still have a battle to go. Probably the most pernicious one, because we can't seem to get teachers to have high expectations.

Eden Jacobowitz is a student at the University of Pennsylvania. His studies were interrupted by a noisy crowd of students, many black and female. He yelled out his window, "Shut up, you water buffalo." He is now charged with racial harassment under the university's Code of Conduct. The school offered to dismiss the charge if he would apologize, attend a racial sensitivity seminar, agree to dormitory probation, and accept a temporary mark on his record which would brand him as guilty. He was told the term "water buffalo" could be interpreted as racist because a water buffalo is a dark primitive animal that lives in Africa. That is questionable semantics, dubious zoology, and incorrect geography. Water buffalo live in Asia, not in Africa. This from the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Jacobowitz is fighting back. The rest of us, however, are still in trouble. The language police are at work on the campuses of our better schools. The word cops are marching under the banner of political correctness. The culture of victimization is hunting for quarry. American English is in danger of losing its muscle and energy. That's what these bozos are doing to us.

This was in 1993. Fortunately, after MUCH media coverage, the charges were dropped. Today, who knows who would have won?

Because it is instant attention in an increasingly "me FIRST" world. People from all walks of life are taking offense to things, and the media blows it way out. What /is/ politically correct? Why does it even matter? What is acceptable today is a slur the next, and a perfectly normal comment can make headlines in a week.

The nation is divided on political and spiritual issues which is why people are jumping and getting mean sometimes. The Atheists, it seems, were taught to hate Christians.

one reason is that people are raised differently now than they were 10 years ago, then it was o.k. to smack your kids mouth when they back talked, now that would be frowned upon. so, in theory, people today are more "sensitive".

If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn`t buy one. If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed. If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn`t eat meat. If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone. If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat his enemy. A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good. If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life. If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect. If a black man or Hispanic are conservative, they see themselves as independently successful. Their liberal counterparts see themselves as victims in need of government protection. If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.

A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him. If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down. If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church. A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. (Unless it's a foreign religion, of course!) If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about bshopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it. A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his. If a conservative slips and falls in a store, he gets up, laughs and is embarrassed. If a liberal slips and falls, he grabs his neck, moans like he's in labor and then sues. If a conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh. If a liberal reads this he will delete it and try to ban the use of email for everyone for life.
