How come I've become so mean?

at first I just thought that's how my sense of humor was, but now I'm not so sure. various people have told me I'm mean, in a joking way, but now I'm certain that's how they really felt. I don't try to be mean, but sometimes I get carried away. I want to be a nice person, but for some reason I think acting this way would let people walk all over me. why?

I went through the same thing years ago; my sense of humor (which tends to sarcasm and sharpness) slipped into being mean. I lost a couple of friends, till an even better friend warned me about what was happening. I asked my mom how to change; she said to always think before I "make a crack". Ask myself "will everybody laugh, or will one person fall silent." A joke that is hurtful to even one person is NOT a joke. She said to apologize to my friends (including the ones I had lost) and tell them I was trying to change -- and then change.
To avoid being walked on, what you need to be is "assertive" not "aggressive." Mean jokes and the like are "aggressive". To change that to being "assertive" don't tell the mean jokes and when someone else does, tell them about it, right then, to their face. Calmly and maturely, but tell them. Assertiveness if about standing your ground, but not taking the other guy's ground.
