When you reversed the poles, you probably melted the insides and shorted it out. Therefore, it won't take or hold a charge. You need a new battery.

Sometimes when poles are reversed it also blows fuses. Not sure if an older car like yours has it but some newer ones have a main fuse between battery and fuse box that blows first.
