Does it really matter which parent fills out FAFSA? Will they check to see if you're telling the truth?
My parents have been divorced and I lived with my mom until I was 13 and my dad gained custody. I have been living with my dad for almost 5 years now. The problem is, if my dad fills out my FAFSA, I'm afraid I won't get any money. He is the owner/operator of his own trucking company and makes good money on the loads but most of the money goes back into paying for gas, truck repairs, etc. We also have a lot of medical bills. My dad needs knee surgery again and has wracked up a big debt already. My stepmother recently had to spend almost a month in the hospital after a bout of colitis, having to have some of her intestines removed, and then getting pneumonia. She was in a coma for 5 days. On the other side of things, my mom has been living off the system for as long as I can remember. We always had to rely on food stamps to have food on the table and she could barely hold a job. We lived in income based apartments for 6-7 years. Now she is getting minimum wage working at a gas station. My best option for getting financial aid is to have her fill it out. But she is hesitant because she doesn't want to get charged with fraud. What are the odds we would get caught?
