One school of thought is that Atlantis was located on "Thira", off the coast of Greece in the Mediterranean. An archeological dig has been going on there for a long time and a whole city has been found underground, that they're slowly digging up. You should Google Earth "Thira" and check it out. You can clearly see that it's a huge erupted volcano. They say that it's so big that when it erupted it was the loudest sound ever created on Earth. Pretty cool.

Atlantis was situated between Europe and North America. Forget about it sinking beneath the waves. Continental drift moved it south, then west, to it's present location. These days we call it Australia.
But seriously? Dr. Charles Pellegrino thinks the legend began with the island of Thera, near Crete. There the civilisation was much further advanced than the rest of the current world and was wiped out by a volcanic eruption so unusual that it couldn't be understood until Mount St. Helens erupted in the 1980s.
Forget the myths and the magic, forget the legends. If you want to know what probably happened read Pellegrino's "Unearthing Atlantis". It should be available on inter-library loan if you don't want to buy a copy. It's a fascinating book from a man who can fairly be described as a polymath. He's extraordinary.
