There are neurotransmitter compounds working between brain cells to take the message from one cell to another. One of the most abundant of these compounds is GABA. The function of GABA is to inhibit neurotransmission and reduce the brain activity. Otherwise when the brain will over work it will over heat and fry itself. Alcohol binds itself to the GABA molecule and increases its activity. Which of course inhibits neurotransmission process and retards the nervous system activity. So people don't think as fast or well, and that is when all the crazy comes out. Of course you shouldn't ignore the placebo effect completely. Regardless of the alcohol, people go crazy because they want to go crazy too. So what you see is not just the chemical work of the alcohol.
If I remember well...it all depends on the fact that our blood brain barrier (which is a sort of a wall separating the blood from extracellular fluid in the central system) it' s semiporous. Alcohol can pass through this barrier and so it affects the brain, which means our behaviors, our thoughts, our emotions...if someone drinks without eating, or doesn't usually drink, or because of genetic reasons, alcohol can't be metabolised and it affects the brain more.
I am not going in biological descriptions but one thing is certain that it causes alternate state of mind. Unbalanced in conscious, unconscious and sub conscious creates a chaotic condition in our mind. This disables our thinking process. But this only happens to those who are trying for the first time. Once got addicted mind will establish its stability.
