Should I accept my Christmas Bonus?
I work as a handyman and have done most of my work for a one lady, who was also a friend, this year. Recently there have been some problems with her feeling under-appreciated. She had become very needy and, I believe, started seeing me as in a relationship with her. It was causing a lot of stress in my life and in my marriage so I decided a few days ago that I could not continue working for her or continue our friendship.
I picked up the remainder of my tools from her house, while she was working, and there was a Christmas present for me. Under the circumstances, I didn't feel I could accept it and sent her an email thanking her and explaining that.
This morning, when I woke up, she had transferred a large (about 1 week's pay) Christmas Bonus into my PayPal account and stated that is was to thank me for all the work I had done for her this year. My initial reaction was to refund it back to her for the same reason I did not accept her Christmas gift to me. Then I wondered if accepting the bonus for the work I had done is different than accepting a gift on a personal level. Should I return the Christmas Bonus or accept it as appreciation of the work I have done for her this year?
