Right now, I want to find and read fiction that is intelligent, deep, substantive and imaginative, comparing well to Frank Herbert's. Ideas?

I'm particularly interested in books that are subtle to read, whose language is a little cryptic and implicit but are well written, and leave to the readers to interpret, reflect and think through.
