Why don't ants move when you keep smashing them?
Every time I go for my morning run there's this one bustling anthill on the sidewalk outside my house that I step on. All I do is lift one of my feet and plant it over the hill for a few seconds and when I lift it up there are always a couple dozen little ant bodies that have been squashed. Yet day after day the ants rebuild the anthill, at which point I flatten the structure again and of course crush many ants.
I don't care that they're there, as I like insects and enjoy watching them, but my question is why do you think the ants continue to rebuild their colony in the same spot? Do they not notice there is giant guy planting a huge running sneaker on top of their home pretty routinely? Why would they not adapt to such a predictable trend?
