Luke 2:1-7
Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

I frequently swaddled my son in his baby blankets when it was nap time; he seemed to like it. I'd wrap him up snug like a baby burrito.

My husband was really good at swaddling, too. I felt like he could throw the baby like a football and she would not come out of her tightly wrapped blanket. :)

A blanket that is used to wrap/bind the baby, as in cloth, not clothes. It's not the diaper, it's traditional to wrap a child tightly, perhaps to give them the security that mimics the womb.

Securely wrapped in cloth like bandages.

A friend was swaddled as a baby/toddler. They are wrapped tight so they can't move their arms and legs at night.

Yes, I think they may need to be wrapped like that at first because they injure themselves with the fingernails otherwise. That's one reason.

Swaddling a babe means to wrap it tightly in a blanket. Many infants, esp little ones, find it very comforting and soothing. In those days they may have had lengths of wool or linen specifically for swaddling.
