Who do you think was/is the most honest President since 1960? Why?

Report as

Jimmy Carter without a doubt. And he has continued to be consistent. I don't always agree with him, but he is a conviction politician who is trying to make the world a better place.

It's strange, I am definitely a conservative (although not the American variety), but if I were to make a top ten of politicians I most admire and consider to be honest, the vast majority would be from the other side of the political spectrum. Tony Ben would probably top the list.
Report as
I think most are out of the running Seedy, I think it's virtually impossible to make much progress as an honest politician. Perhaps more so now than ever, there is so much pressure to be all things to all men, which explains why Obama is such an abysmal disappointment.
Report as
I think the term conservative in the US has become mired within the Republican party, which I feel is not conservatism in it true sense any more. I consider myself very much conservative, but I would never associate myself with the Republican party in the US.
Report as
I regard Obama as an honest man, trying to do his best.....everyone has problems, its how they deal with it that defines them....
Report as
Although I do not find Obama as necessarily dishonest, he just does not know what he's doing. Seems his staffing choices are questionable and his "affordable" healthcare bill, he seems to not know what's in it. He's effected the healthcare in a very bad way in the US.
Report as
It seems everybody but Americans seems to think you guys need Universal Healthcare, I can't blame him for trying.

Yet, drone strikes continue, Gitmo didn't get closed down, and then there is the whole internet spying thing. To me it looks like he is no different to the Republicans. So much for change.
Report as
yes,but we are out of iraq, have reduced troops on our way out of afganistan, shut down 50% of Gitmo, and are starting to consider raising the minimum wage......affordable care stuff needs a more complete oversight structure from government to regulate health care costs and the pharmacutical industry. republicans get a lot of money from these companies because they do not want regulation......

This would be the same Ronald Reagan who sold arms to Iran to fund terrorists trying to overthrow a democratically elected government?

Dawg, I suggest you acquaint yourself with history and the repeated lies told by President Reagan regarding Iran-Contra. He was as two-faced and deceitful as President Nixon. The following link will help you understand the chronological timeline of this fiasco.

History is not an opinion, it is fact. It is horrifying that you would not know the facts concerning a presidency that occurred within the last thirty years.

Carter. Without a doubt. Just couldn't bring himself to lie like the others. As a result he never accomplished anything flavorful or flashy. Just a downhome, honest guy.

Beat me too it. If there any of who you could say, "his heart was in the right place" it is without a doubt Jimmy Carter.

The biggest problem Carter had was an intense period of Inflation. Mortgage interest rates were 15 percent!

I think people are naming their favorite presidents, or the best presidents. But the question was about the most honest. I agree it was carter.

You must be kidding carter there was talk if having a tri-presidency because of him.

President Obama. He is doing for the average/low income American people what they need and want. And he honestly feels he is doing the right thing. The media and the other 50% of Americans that just hate him for whatever he is or does, are tearing him down and trying to sway public opinion to be unfavorable to him.

Doing for the average low income people?? I'm considered low income yet I cannot afford the health care my work offers (it would be over half my paycheck) and i cannot afford state healthcare (nearly half my paycheck). I do not have any outstanding bills and I do not have even one credit card to have to pay. I'm talking day to day living here, housing, utilities, and groceries. Even if I stopped eating out and buying shoes and clothes for my kids entirely I still would not be able to afford healthcare and live in a somewhat decent rental. It's come to a choice between healthcare and raising my kids in a slum. So I cannot personally agree with you on this

I'm sorry but he is the WORST president we've ever had he tried to take guns away he is raising taxes he's giving billions to middle eastern countries that hate Americans and WANT TO KILL US!

I'm surprised people mentioned JFK. He was a good President, but he cheated on his wife. As far as the question goes not enough data is available to make a quantifiable judgement. I agree with what people have said about Carter, but how can we know if Ford was any more or less honest. We have examples of bad moral judgement regarding some of the presidents from this era, but not for all of them.

Reagan, Clinton or GHW Bush. Go back to 1860? Honest Abe. And so says a CNN poll. Clinton lied about Monica, I give him a black mark. Reagan lied about Iran-Contra, similarly.
"Lincoln continues to rank at the top in all categories because he is perceived to embody the nation's avowed core values: integrity, moderation, persistence in the pursuit of honorable goals, respect for human rights, compassion," Howard University's Edna Medford added.Founding father?George Washington?finished second in the new survey, followed by?Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, and Harry Truman, in that order.Bill Clinton registered the greatest gain among recent presidents, jumping from 21st to 15th in the survey. Ronald Reagan edged forward from 11th to 10th overall, while George H.W. Bush moved up from 20th to 18th."

i really dont put much into a cnn poll, just your opinion of which prez was the most---MODERN DAY SINCE 1960. any poll that increases bushes ratings should be veiwed with skepticism....
Report as
I liked Clinton, and except for Monica I think he played fair with America. Reagan has to account for Iran-Contra, but he admitted it was his responsibility. I think Carter did a pretty good job leveling but screwed up almost everything else, and he doesn't do well in the polls.
CNN's poll was of the average citizen. If you ask historians, you would probably come up with a slightly different ranking. But you're right, its all opinions, and if you are hostile to the Bushes, nothing I say will change your mind.
