I got my first period...

Hi. I got my first period yesterday (Saturday) and I don't know how to tell my mother. we're not like super close and comfortable talking about EVERYTHING but we are close. idk.. And also, how do I know if my bleeding is too heavy? I've been bleeding all day yesterday and today and probably tomorrow too.

Your first period is always your worst period, sadly. It will usually last anywhere from 4-7 days. You're going to have a pretty heavy flow, so try to talk to her as soon as possible. I know, it's totally awkward. When I had to tell my mom, I looked up some ways on how to do it on google. I found some pretty creative ideas and my favorite was getting a pad (if you know where she keeps hers) and writing down a message on it to let her know that you have gotten your period (something like, "Don't you dare tell dad!" or "Needed to borrow this, sorry.") and then just try talking to her. I ended up talking to my mom, even though I was originally going to do it the more creative way ?. I suggest you tell her as soon as possible, and try to be blunt about it. Keep the conversation quick, that way you won't feel too awkward. Then, once you get all the stuff you need, make a little kit that you can take to school full of pads, panty liners, and tampons (if you use them). Be glad that it started over the holidays though, you're going to need to figure out how to manage it! Also, the cramps hurt, pardon my language, like hell. Get some chocolate as well cause you're going to want something sweet. Your mom will understand, she's been through it too. Even asking friends, older siblings, or older cousins who have gotten their period will probably help. Look stuff up in google if you want to know about something. I know, it's a lot of information to take in, but I hope this helped!

hmmmm chocolate womans best friend on her monthly ;-) I use to take feminax for my pain, do they sell that in America?

I haven't seen it before, but I just looked it up and haven't found much about it so I'm not sure. I myself don't usually take anything unless the pain becomes overwhelming, then I'd take generic painkillers.

tell your mom, it's a completely natural thing and she can tell you what to expect. it'll last from 5-7 days (give or take a few days) and you'll know when it's heavy

Tell her you want to pick some stuff from a grocery store. Tell her to take you there.
When your there buy some pads so that she sees it and so she'll automatically ask you about it and you can be like "Hey mom! Im a Lady now!!" ;P
and she'll guide you from there on.

Talking to your mother is the best thing. She can explain how everything works and what you need. She will understand this. If your soaking a pad in a hour and its going through your underwear than that's heavy.

no big deal. moms was there before you and her mom before her. Its the circle of life. Just tell her matter-of-factly and ask her for suggestions.

Tell your mom that Mother Nature FINALLY decided to give you your "monthly gift." That's how I told my mom.
For your first period, the flow won't be too heavy. A heavy flow is where you would probably need to change your pad 3-4 times a day. You should only have to change it once or twice. Your period is going to last about 5-7 days, so yes, you will probably be bleeding tomorrow too, but it won't be much.

I totally understand how you feel. I got mine this year while I was at school and i was so nervous...and i had bled through which really sucked. luckily no one noticed so i just asked my friend for a pad but anyways I have mom issues like that also but i just said mom i got my period and she wasnt fazed so just tell her its much easier. and to know if you have heavy bleeding your pad will be full of blood and when you arent bleeding heavily there will only be alittle...very simple.

Just tell your mum like you told us. You can bleed for up to 7 days first couple of days can be quite heavy,.but everyone's different. Takes a while for your periods to sort themselves out. Don't worry you have the two angels of Tampon and Sanitary Towel with Wings at your disposal ;-) You can get both in different thickness and size depending on how heavy your flow is. I use to wear tampons when swimming and doing sports. I wear sanitary towels for first few days as I've always been quite heavy, suffered pain with mine, hot water bottle and some paracetamol should help. If theres anything else you need to know don't be afraid to ask. I've got some funny stories and memories of us girls at school starting our periods. Welcome to our world, thanks for sharing.

Periods normally last up to 8 days, could be more could be less. Don't be afraid to tell your mum, she went through it too when she was young! She'll understand :)
