Jacques Torres Chocolate is the best according to most consumer reviews. Others in a descending order include Byrne & Carlson, Candina Chocolatier, Martine's Chocolates, Fran's Chocolates and Confections.

Is there a bad chocolate? I like your basic Hershey, but who could not put Ghirardelli's in the top group?

I had a neighbour who hailed from the US, met an Australian while they were both at Cornell, and migrated to Oz. She said the thing she missed most about America was Reese's Peanut Buttercup.

A couple of years later a few speciality stores began stocking it and she was in Chocolate Heaven. So yes, boys and girls, there is life after the US.

I know this is not an answer to your question, but the BEST chocolate in the ENTIRE WORLD is Cadbury's. Either Whole Nut or Dairy Milk.

You can get some home grown version of it here, made by Hershey, but it's total crap.

Go to England, it's worth the fare, and pop into the first shop you see and get Cadburied!

There ain't nothing like it.

A Russian on-line chess opponent sent me a selection of Russian chocolate -- almost all of it dark chocolate, which I like.

I sent him a selection of Australian chocolates including some of the fancier stuff I guess he'd find hard to buy in Moscow. And, yes, I included Cadburys.

From his non-committal response I gathered that he preferred plain and dark.

...and do you recall Callard and Bowser licorice toffee? I just did a web search, and looks like it is no longer available.

I have not eaten bad chocolate--here or there (except for some I bought after a holiday on sale that was OLD and should have been thrown away, not sold. Everywhere I've gone in other countries the chocolate most often served was Swiss (I don't know the reason.) I have to admit I've not been to England, so I've not been Cadburied. However, this time I'm going to agree with Melloblue--Ghirardelli's at the top, and Hershey's any day of the week.

Well English chocolate is amazing. We think Hershey's and guitars LI is great. You have never tried chocolate from England. I wish they sold it here in America. Well here in America I agree with mellblue and Barbara-ghiradelli and hersheys at any time anywhere.
