Why is it "merry" christmas but "happy" new year?

Report as

Maybe it's because "merry" sounds more "festive" for the season than "happy" does. Happy New Year seems to imply "let's put the previous year behind us". Merry new year just doesn't sound right. Happy Christmas doesn't sound right either.
