Where did the expression "to eighty- six someone" come from?

Where did the expression "to eighty six someone" come from? The only origin I could find was that it came from prohibition time. During that time a bar located on 86th street in NYC would use that phrase when the police were coming and everyone would go out the back door.

In restaurant lingo, it means "no more" as in when an item is not available such as a steak, they say, "86 the new york strip steak."
