Who really controls the world? Is it God, humankind or someone else?

Jesus said: "The ruler of the world will be cast out." And he added: "The ruler of the world is coming. And he has no hold on me." - John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11. So the ruler of this world is in opposition to Jesus. Who could this be?

Despite the efforts of well-meaning humans, the world has suffered terribly throughout history. When the natural desire of people is to live at peace, they commonly hate and kill one another - and with such viciousness. Humans have used gas chambers, concentration camps, flamethrowers, napalm bombs, and other heinous methods to torture and slaughter one another mercilessly. Have you ever wondered whether some wicked, invisible power is influencing people to commit such acts of violence?

The Bible clearly shows than an intelligent, unseen person has been controlling both men and nations. It says: "The whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one." And the Bible identifies him, saying: "The one called Devil and Satan is misleading the entire inhabited earth." - 1 john 5:19; Revelation 12:9.

Satan is not alone in his rulership of the world. He was successful in persuading some of the other angels to join him in rebellion against God. These became demons, his spirit accomplices. The Bible urges Christians: "Stand firm against the machinations of the Devil; because we have a wrestling, not against blood and flesh, but against the world rulers of this darkness, against the wicked spirit forces in the heavenly places." - Ephesians 6:11, 12

Many scoff at the idea that this world is ruled by wicked spirits. But their disbelief is not surprising, since the bible says: "Satan himself keeps transforming himself into an angel of light." (2 Corinthians 11:14) His most clever deception has been in blinding many to the fact that he and his demons really exist. But do not be deceived! The Devil and his demons are real and you need to resist them continually. - 1 Peter 5:8, 9.

Report as
@Moni: How do you square the verses you reference which says to resist the rulers of the world because they are of Satan, with Romans 13:1-5 which reads (NIV):
----------------------------
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God's servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience
---------------------------
Let's look at some of quotes: "there is no authority except that which God has established", "rulers hold no terror for those who do right", and "if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God's servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer." That doesn't sound like Satan ruling the world. But when one considers such instituted governments as Nazi Germany, the Khmer Rouge, Communist Russia under Stalin, and Islamic nations under strict Sharia law, then the instructions contained in the verses I quoted are particularly repugnant.
Report as
At 1 John 5:19 the Bible states: "The whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one." Would you say that God is wicked? When you look at the world's conditions today would you say that he is in control? The Bible says God is love and with evil things he cannot be tried, nor does he try anyone else. (1 John 4:8; James 1:13). God is just allowing the governments to exist today. Yes, as true Christians we respect governmental authority in the sense that we obey traffic laws, pay our taxes, etc. In following Jesus example true Christians are no part of this world just as Jesus was no part of the world. (John 17:16). When it comes to voting true Christians would not participate in elections, but rather they would remain neutral. We respect and act in harmony with the government as long as the laws do not conflict with God's laws. (Acts 5:29).

From a Biblical standpoint the Devil control's the world as we know it. While Jesus was on Earth he referred to Satan as “the ruler of this world.” (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11) It isn't until the book of Revelation, that speaks of him being abyssed ushering a new era for mankind. (Revelation 20:1-3; 12:12) However as mankind as not yet received such blessings it is clear tat Satan is still being allowed to control.

This brings to mind an interesting point. Jesus was a Jew and Jews do not believe in Satan as a devil type character, but more a tester to test mankind for their faith towards their God. Why then would Jesus as a Jewish believer make such a statement?
Report as
I don't know much about modern day Judaism but in the Hebrew scriptures the Devil has been painted as an individual not only as disrupting the lives of humankind but as an opposer of God himself. (Job 1:6, ftn; Job 2:1-7; Zec 3:1, 2) While in the wilderness, Satan showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and their glory and said: “All these things I will give you if you fall down and do an act of worship to me.” (Matt. 4:8, 9) Satan could not offer something that was not already his. Indeed by showing Jesus all the kingdoms of the world, the Devil was offering him unprecedented human power that was in direct contrast to the heavenly kingdom which Jesus preached. (Matthew 4:23, John 7:16).
Report as
In the case of Job, he was doing his job as the tester (not opposer) for God If you read the context you can see that.
Zac 3:1-2 from the Tanakh
1 And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of HaShem, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him.
2 And HaShem said unto Satan: 'The HaShem rebuke thee, O Satan, yea, HaShem that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee; is not this man a brand plucked out of the fire?'

Notice that Satan is the "accuser", not the opposer.
Report as
Accusation is just one of the many traits that Satan displays. Revelation 12:10, 12 refers to him as the accuser of Christs brothers. In the Hebrew Scriptures, the word sa·tan? appears without the definite article. Used in this way, it applies in its first appearance to the angel that stood in the road to resist Balaam as he set out with the objective of cursing the Israelites. (Nu 22:22, 32) In other instances it refers to individuals as resisters of other men. (1Sa 29:4; 2Sa 19:21, 22; 1Ki 5:4; 11:14, 23, 25) But it is used with the definite article ha to refer to Satan the Devil, the chief Adversary of God. The designation "Satan" therefore outlines his primary purpose as a resister or opposer to God's will.
Report as
Yes you are correct about the difference between satan and the Ha-Satan, except, in the OT, at least in the Tanakh he is not referenced as 'devil", there is no Jewish version of the devil., Ha-Satan is Gods prosecutor, not his enemy in Jewish circles, only in Christian and Islamic.
Report as
In the Old Testament Satan is not referred to as the Devil. However, he is neither referred to as an agent employed by God. At the time of Satan’s act in causing Eve and then Adam to rebel against God, God said to the serpent (actually speaking to Satan, since a mere beast could not understand the issues involved): “Dust is what you will eat all the days of your life. And I shall put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed. He will bruise you in the head and you will bruise him in the heel.” (Ge 3:14, 15) Here God made it known that Satan, cast outside God’s holy organization, would have no life-sustaining hope but would ‘eat dust,’ as it were, until he died. The “seed” eventually was to bruise him in the head, which would signify a death wound. In the Old Testament death is repeatedly emphasized as the ultimate punishment for sin. (Le 20:2, 27; Ex 32:27; 1Ki 2:25, 31, 32, 34; Ez 18:4) Sin being anything not in harmony with, hence contrary to, God’s personality, standards, ways, and will; anything marring one’s relationship with God. It may be in word (Job 2:10; Ps 39:1), in deed (doing wrong acts [Le 20:20; 2Co 12:21] or failing to do what should be done [Nu 9:13; Jas 4:17]), or in mind or heart attitude (Pr 21:4; compare also Ro 3:9-18; 2Pe 2:12-15). For God to condemn Satan for acts he himself condoned would be contradictory and would invalidate the whole Jewish belief system in it's entirety.
Report as
Well I would suggest you investigate this with a person that follows Judaism. The Devil is an invention of the Christians. Satan tied in with the Snake of the Adam and eve myth is not tied in until the book of Revelations. I'm actually surprised that Lior who is Jewish hasn't piped in on this question, she usually does. She has made it plain that the Devil is not Satan, but a christian invention to keep the masses in line.

That's basically right. Lucifer is just a mistranslation of Halel Ben Shahar. They referred to placer Venus. There is no Lucifer. Christians just made it up to scare their flock from doing what they disapprove.

You can also read some of it here, it's not real clear but it does show the evolution of Satan.

Very interesting. Like I said, I don't know much about modern Judaism. Even by Jesus time Judaism had changed to the point where more emphasis had been put on the interpretation of the law than the overall nature of it. Jesus did not use Satan as a means to control, as nowhere in the New Testament are Christians told to fear him. Rather, we are encouraged to rage spiritual warfare against him. (Eph 6:16; 1Pe 5:9) For true Christians, Jesus testimony regarding the nature of Satan is the truth. He is referred to as the “firstborn of all creation,” and therefore bore direct witness to the event's recorded in the Old Testament and was familiar with the overlying issues involved therein. (Colossians 1:15)

No, He doesn't. There is no demonstrable evidence any god ever has. Your own scriptures state Satan runs the show here and man's own freewill and sin is the source of our collective suffering. While this baseless nonsense is bad enough, we are constantly struck by all manner of natural calamity that causes long term misery for huge masses your invisible god is supposed to love.
Ha! The love of an abusive stepfather is more desirable, and certainly easier to prove.

Satan is the god of this world. God originally gave man dominion over the earth, but when Adam, the first man, fell from God's grace, satan stepped in quickly and took over Adam's authority. The bible says, "satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God." (2 Corinthians 4:3-5)

If you understand this, you will see why the world is in such a state of chaos, as satan is behind much of the evil and corruption within the government, society and even the church.

Satan "owns" this world right now, but Jesus Christ will return to take it all back one day soon. Man can use his gift of "free will" to decide which side he will align himself with, but he must choose wisely, because that very decision might cost him his eternal life.

1 John 5:19 - highlights that "Satan is the Ruler of this world." We can see from all of the adversity that exist there is a very strong darkness ruling over man - with all of the civil unrest, homelessness, unemployment, starvation, crime, sickness, senseless killing, lack of natural compassion - we are living during some very DARK times and it shows everyday we turn on the TV to another senseless killing.

Almighty God, Jehovah created mankind to live under "perfect" conditions. His purpose will not go unfulfilled. No matter where you turn people are suffering - some more then others - yet it will all lead to the downfall of mankind. (Daniel 2:44) We need a Kingdom that will be set up for all mankind to reside under peace. (Revelation 21:3,4)

The evidence in world, points to a very strong evil influence controlling the world today, the violence, the sickness and wars. The Bible at James 1:13 says " When under trial, let no one say: “I am being tried by God. For with evil things God cannot be tried, nor does he himself try anyone." So according to this scripture, God cannot be associated with evil things, and there are plenty of evil things happening that results in a wicked world. The Bible does say at 1 John 5:19 " We know that we originate with God, but the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one" This scripture is clear when says the whole world lying or being controled by something wicked. Revelations 12:9 says "So down the great dragon+ was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him." I would suggest investigating how you can be protected from this influence, the answers are in your own Bible. Satan the Devil is the “ruler of the demons” and also the “ruler of this world,” from whom our Leader Jesus Christ refused to accept any throne of rulership. (Matthew 4:8-10) Our Savior warned that Satan the Devil was the wicked invisible ruler of this world. On the night before he was killed outside the city of Jerusalem, Jesus Christ said to eleven of his faithful followers: “I shall not speak much with you any more, for the ruler of the world is coming. And yet he has no hold on me.” “The ruler of this world has been judged.” (John 14:30; 16:11) With all the wickedness we see in the world today, This in itself shows that “the one who controls the world” is not man's creator Jehovah God, nor his Son Jesus Christ , nor man. The Bible testifies to this at 1 John 5:19 by saying that “the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one.” And Revelation 12:9 says that he is “misleading the entire inhabited earth.” That the Devil’s influence is earth-wide is evident from the general thinking, actions and immoral traits of the world.

1 John 5:19 gives us the clear answer "We know we originate with God, but the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one." Who is this wicked one? Luke 4:6 gives the answer "Then the Devil said to him: I will give you all this authority and their glory, because it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish." So the Devil is the ruler or controls the world for he himself said he gives it to whomever he wishes which implies it belong to him. Therefore all the misery we face is because of him. 1 John 5:19 says the “whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one”. At Ephesians 6:11, 12 Satan is associated with “the wicked spirit forces in the heavenly places,” and “the world rulers of this darkness.” Ephesians 2:2 calls the Devil “the ruler of the authority of the air, the spirit that now operates in the sons of disobedience.” Thus Satan promotes a spirit that governs the way that people think and act. Revelation 12:9 states that he is the one “misleading the entire inhabited earth.” Satan is therefore “the ruler of this world.” (Joh 12:31) This is temporary and began when man sinned believing the devil who became the father of the lie (Genesis 3:1-5, John 8:44, Revelation 12:12). We have a choice of either following the way of the world, and ultimately the Devil, or taking a wiser course (John 17:3, 1 John 5:3) Jesus said his disciples are no part of the world (John 17:14-17). When this wicked ruler is removed (1 John 3:8, Hebrews 2:14) the world will be a much better place (Psalm 37:10, 11, 29, Revelation 21:3,4).

That's an interesting question! An at first thought most people may say that God rules the world. There are even old songs like 'He's(God) got the whole world in his hands', that promotes that ideal. But the reality is when we look at the world around us, it is hard to believe that God would be in control of the violent world we see today! This is not the thought that is supported by the scriptures. The Bible at 2 Corinthians 4:4 says 'among whom the god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, so that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through.' So who would blind people's minds to the good news about Jesus? This one is identified at Revelation 12:9 which says 'So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth...and his angels were hurled down with him.' Now when you think of Satan being behind the scene controlling thinks you understand why there is so much crime, violence and wickedness.

There are rules in the spiritual realm. The devil has rights over all the people. Here s where the phrase ''God gives the hardest tests to His strongest soldiers'' comes from. But the further they are from God, the more right the devil has over them. The more people pray to the devil, the more rights he has over the people they pray for, and the ones praying. That also includes other religions since he pretends to be the gods of other religions, and even the real God in some religions. The more christians pray, the less right the devil has over them and the people they pray for. But God also has certain rights over certain specific people, who are known as ''the chosen ones'', even tho some versions of the Bible call them ‘’the elected’’. The Bible says that many are called, but few are chosen. Someone who is chosen is someone who either will always end up in the side of God, or will always end up in the side of the devil. Unless they prefer to die, or suffer. For example: I know two people who were chosen. Continue in comments.

One of them, Nelson Madera, had a terrible car accident for resisting God s call. How did this happen? Because resisting God s call gave the devil rights over that person. The devil couldn’t keep him on his side, so that terrible car accident in which his wife died, him and his son were dying and his daughters were injured badly, was actually his last chance. He chose to accept the call of God. Now he is a pastor. His wife revived, then was healed from a broken spine and a blown up heart, and a pancreas out of place. His whole family is average healthy. The other guy who was chosen by God after living for the devil. This man was shot on the head several times. After walking to the doctor s office with the head shots, he died while leaving. Three days later, God sent a man to pray for his corpse, and when he did, the man who died, was sent back into his body. Now, Idk if he is still alive, or if he rests, but I met him like 5 years ago, he was a preacher. I wanted to shake his hand and he took my finger an passed it by the holes on his skull.

Job 38:1-6 Then the Lord answered...out of the whirlwind and said, Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up now thy loins like a man: for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if you have understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if you know? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof...

No one controls the world. I control my decisions. My wife controls hers. The government controls the laws (but people can choose to break them, so gov't doesn't really control people unless people allow it). The earth controls the weather system and nature (not living creatures) in general.

If YOU Believe Jesus Wouldn’t Lie and Other God Inspired Verses. While Jesus was on Earth He Said Satan is “the ruler of this world “ Until Jesus get the Ok from His Father and God and creator to remove Him.(John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11) It isn't until the book of Revelation, that speaks of him being abyssed ushering a new era for mankind. (Revelation 20:1-3; 12:12) However as mankind as not yet received such blessings it is clear that Satan is still being allowed to control.
