Do I look odd when I go to the doctor because I act very very nervous?

I've been to the doctor a few times for some moderately serious things and each time I've acted extremely nervous: not making eye contact, hands planted firmly on knees when sitting, talking quietly, sometimes a shaky voice, eyes darting, head looking down often; things like that. Do doctors see patients act like that a lot or is it just me? I'm 18, if that matters.

I think it's pretty common to be nervous when going to the doctor especially if you have something serious going on. Doctors see all kinds of people, so it is not just you. I always feel like a ball of nerves. Would it help to bring along a friend or family member?

*MM Sounds quite normal. Many people's anxiety level spikes before/during a/an office visit, irrespective of the reason for the consultation. Safe Journey

Thanks, Shooshie! And yes it does help to bring a friend or family member. :)

Thanks to you, too, Howlinwolf!

My blood pressure has been elevated at the start of a visit and so they rechecked afterward and it was fine. I think for me, I always imagine the worst even if I am going for some minor thing. The fear of the unknown...

***** Hi Marcus, doctors are used to nervous patients. I'm sure they see exactly what you've described and worse often. Don't even worry about it, you'll be fine! :) *****

Hi Marcus!!! My cat acts the same way when I take her to the vet.

Many people have a similar response. Don't worry. Be happy. Just tell yourself that they want to help you. Also remember that almost nothing shocks them. If you have a unique medical condition that peaks their curiosity, that is better for you. It ensures that you will get more attention eyeballs checking your symptoms and condition.

Hopefully the doctor appointment went better than most. I hope you have a very happy and healthy New Year! I was happy to see you on here as well. You are a good kid with a fine mind and personality. Sorry if "kid" sounds offensive - a very nice young man is probably more appropriate. :-) take care
Report as
I think "kid" can refer to a young man, so that's fine. :) And the doctor apt was okay, nothing is confirmed yet, though. So I don't know what's going on.

Unless someone knows you well enough to tell that you're nervous, or you make it super obvious, no one will notice or care. Most people think nervousness is very noticeable, but it's not.

Health professionals are quite used to the intense behavior you describe. It's this "white coat syndrome" that results in false blood pressure readings in the doctors office. This doesn't make you look funny . They know down under that quivering mass of humanity there's a handsome dude somewhere.
Happy New year Marcus. Maybe someday you will be wearing the white coat and putting others at ease and not let on that you are one of them.

Surprised you haven't heard of it Dodgy. I'm sure you will now. Have you ever noticed that phenomenon when once a subject obscure to you comes up it seems to reappear again and again?
Report as
Yep, that certainly happens -- probably as a result of it lodging in our awareness.

Crikey, Marcus, I get like that when I'm talking to my wife.

Seriously, it's not uncommon to be nervous during a medical interview. Your doctor has seen it all before and understands.

I do to. I know lots if Christians don't like it because of the religion parts. They don't realize that's how God intended things to be. Free will got in the way.

MadMarcus~ You may be feeling a little anxious even asking this question. We've known each other for a while and consider each other friends and trusting. I really can't physically tell you if you look nervous going to the doctor or how you look in person. I can say I respect you and know you are smart and an above average looking young man. Now, with that being said, I can offer you this.

Contrary to popular belief, a lot of people are in the medical field because they want to help you. They aren't in it for the money and joke about their patients over a martini at the club after hours. They do want to help you. It's difficult on everybody's psyche to go to the doctors. What if they find something really wrong? Should I have told them I do have trouble reading? What about the sore throat I had?

My mom is an ICU nurse. She is also only person I let give me a shot. I should be way past this. I can give shots and I can deal with legs being severed, I can help birth a kitten or pup, but, I too am reluctant and very nervous. I am a terrible patient. Ask my mom. Don't worry. Be happy, They are there to help. Happy New Year !

Thanks so much, Merlin! I realize many people in the medical field really want to help, like Kookiegirl and others. Also my doctor who just seems like a really caring guy. I didn't know you're in the medical field but that's awesome! I can tell you would be the type to care!
Report as
Also you think I'm above average looking? Haha thank you. :P I don't get that often.
Report as
Oh by the way I act almost no different in person than on here. Honestly! Lol.
Report as
MadMarcus~ you make me laugh. That is a good thing. Yes, I do think you are more handsome than the average "joe" walking down the street. One of the many attributes you have is your intelligence and your honesty. Most people really admire and respect that. All of your fears and nervous reactions are normal. It's the "what ifs" that will drive you crazy. It's nice to hear others have the same feelings. Trust me on this one. I know how it feels to be nervous around doctors!
Take Care and I know I'll see you soon ! :)

Marcus, you know I see it everyday. It's very normal.....maybe even a little white coat syndrome, completely harmless. The more you get to know your doctor, the more comfortable you'll start to feel around him or her.

It really does get a little easier with each visit. You should be able to tell your doctor anything, if you can't, find another one that you can talk to at ease. After all, if you can't trust him enough to tell him every thing, he can't fully help you.
Report as
Kookiegirl - It's definitely me, not him. So far he seems like a very good doctor.
