The quesiton in Tony737's answer is interesting and the only modern war I can think of that could truly be described as a "lightning" war would be the Six Day War when the Israeli's, enormously outnumbered, showed what courage and determination can achieve. If it had happened in Biblical times it would have been written up as a miracle.
But Lightning War and Blitzkrieg both describe the same thing on the chessboard and describe games that must be completed in five minutes or less.
I once wrote a Christmas story (which seems appropriate this week) about how Lightning Chess was invented, and by whom.
It seems that when Valhalla was home to the gods...
It is a strong military campaign aimed at bringing about a swift victory. Blitz involves all-motorized force concentration of tanks, infantry and other artillery. Go to this link for more information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blitzkrieg.
