What is the meaning of life?

Report as

We have no choice in the matter.
We are born.
Hopefully raised by loving family.
Go to school.
Hopefully college.
Fall in love.
Get married.
Have beautiful kids & then grandkids.
If we are lucky enough to find God along that path..... We have hope for eternal life.
That all takes about 80 years so we don't have much time.

Parker, if you are so offended by religious people than how come you are answering a religious question? This is a question whose answer is dependent on the beliefs of those who answer it. We are able to express are beliefs, and you are able to ignore them

@Parkergore2

If the answer is correct, then your choice not to believe is the only problem in this paradigm.

There isn't one. Living with, enduring, and suffering through pain is all life is. Yeah we have ups, but the majority of life is downs.
Make other people happy, is what everyone is going to answer this with. But what about you? Shouldn't your own happiness come before anyone's?
The purpose in life.. the one thing we all have in common. Is death.

Life in the human perspective takes on whatever purpose you attach to it. It's up to you what your life will mean.

that's something everyone has to figure out for themselves. its not about making someone else happy. its about living it to the fullest and doing what makes you feel complete. You only get one chance to live. Do things just to say you did it at least once. live every day like its your last. every day is not promised. they are gifts so appreciate and make use of every single one.

Too religious did you ever think of people who don't believe in that?
Report as
I could say the same to Pop, who was being EXTREMELY inconsiderate of the beliefs of others. It is a religious question, so you are going to get a religious answer from religious people. If people who believe in God offend you, then why are you answering religious questions?
Report as
Technically it's not a religious question, it's just posted in this section- which I remind you folks is religion, spirituality, and philosophy. This question is really more philosophy.
Report as
But the answer to the question depends on the beliefs of those who answer it. Their beliefs should be respected.

The meaning of life is whatever we choose, decide, it to be. The choice, the decision, is ours and yet we are free to seek guidance in making this choice. And it is quite apparent that, in this instance, we are not our own best guide. We have strong evidence that we have miss-guided ourselves into this stress-burdened state of existence.

Meaning is what the source or sender expresses, communicates, or conveys in their message to the observer or receiver, and what the receiver infers from the current context.

So doesn't this imply that we should investigate how life was created and by whom in order to discern its meaning?

Well some people don't believe in god
Report as
Most do.
Report as
Not really. Your god is not a majority belief on earth.
Report as
So what? Why does it offend you when they express their beliefs? You already know that people believe in God, so what difference does it make when people say that they believe in God?
Report as
Only 34% of people are Christian and that is shrinking. Not all people who call themselves Christian believe in god too.
Report as
No, most people do not believe in "God". The majority of people on Earth have a RELIGION- that is not the same as belief in your particular deity.
Report as
Then more people are religious than not, correct?
Report as
Moonlite111, I like your answer and that is God's command for us. For many that does not believe in God, I wonder why and have you always felt that way? It sounds like many who do not believe in God, does not like the hypocrisy of religion. Neither does God. I just ask for those that does not believe in God, think of the possibility that if there was a God, how would you want him to be?
Report as
Badger, religious is not the same as believing in "god". A billion people believe in Brahma and his hundreds of incarnations of the Hindu pantheon. Over a billion people believe in no gods at all. Nearly half a billion are Buddhist, and also don't technically believe in deities as we think of them. Another 350 million believe in Chinese folk religions.
Hell, "religious" doesn't even mean "theist".

Trying to claim belief in "God" is a majority position on Earth is just plain incorrect.
Report as
I never said that Christianity is a majority religion. I am just saying that more people believe in supernatural things of some sort than not. But due to the gullibility and feeblemindedness of man, this doesn't mean much at all. I was just trying to defend a fellow Christian.
Report as
That is a good point ADTML
Report as
And that more people believe in the supernatural than not in no way lends that belief weight or veracity. It's an Argumentum ad Populum. Remember, almost everyone on Earth once believed the Sun revolved around us. That doesn't make it correct.
Report as
What is Argumentum ad Populum? Please use words that normal people would understand.
Report as
Many "normal people" have studied logic.

Argumentum ad Populum is one of the most commonly made logical fallacies. In the Latin it means "argument from popularity", the argument that just because many people believe in or like something that something is true or valid. For example, a teenage girl claims that the fact that "Twilight" is so popular means it is a well written book. This is a fallacy- it's popularity does not make it a good book (in fact it's unbelievably bad).
Report as
There we go again with the word fallacy. And I agree with you on that twilight thing. I could never get into it. Everyone else loved it, but I couldn't see why. It is a truly poorly written novel, and an even worse movie.
Report as
The movies were so bad I could only stomach them with RiffTrax.

there's some think sex, drugs, rock'n roll. some think whoever dies with the most toys. some think $ is the what it's all about. but those with the real big money, to where money sort of a non issue, seek power. some family and relationships. you'll get as many definitions to that as there are people. Those answers all relate to the here and now. But if life is more than that and a continuing never ending experience and death not and end, but doorway. The possibilities and new experiences are mind blowing. Some say we are here and now, on this earth, in a simple form - as in a seed form. Planted for a short time to take root / grow, start to develope - become. And it's not yet known what we shall be - but we shall see Him as He is. If He has created all this complex, colorful, textured physical world - what awaits us in the limitess possibilities of eternity?

Another way to phrase the question is "why am I here for what purpose is there life?" I myself asked that very question a number of years ago. I was trying to find an answer that made some sense. Little by little I began reading the gospels about the life of Christ Jesus I was amazed my interest in the bible began to answer those perplexing questions. This book truly answers such questions and many more with satisfying answers that you can trust and put faith in. The reason being, it contains precious counsel from our Heavenly Father who wants only the best for us. As a suggestion, get a modern day translation so that you can understand what you're reading. Pray before start reading, express what's in your heart to our loving Father. He not only hears but sees what's in your heart. Christ Jesus in prayer in to his Father in John 17 th chapter expresses the importance of taking in knowledge. Read and meditate on verse three of same chapter. Turn to 1 Tim:2:3-5 read and meditate. Knowing the true God and Christ Jesus will help you to find those answers as well as a real hope for the future. May Jehovah bless you in your efforts. jw.org

That's a good question being that when we see things around us we wonder, "what's the meaning of life?' when we live in such terrible conditions. But God had a purposeful meaning for humans when he created us (Read Genesis 2:8-9) from the beginning. But what about today...well there is hope, for the Bible tells us in Psalms. 37:29: “The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will reside forever upon it.” This promise makes it clear that God’s basic purpose regarding the earth and mankind has not changed. I hope this was helpful and do go to the link AMATL sent you...it will clearly answer your question.

For any of our lives to have any real meaning, we need a personal relationship with Jehovah God, the Creator of the universe. (Psalms 83:18) Sadly, many today, however, have doubts that God even exists, and they therefore find it difficult to relate to him. And to make matters worse they , therefore, try to discourage anyone who has built up faith in God, hopefully this is not the case with you. By all means, continue to build on your precious relationship with him each and every day! The bible says in James 4:8 "Draw close to God and he will draw close to you". Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ said in Matthew 6:33,34 “Keep on, then, seeking first the Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these other things will be added to you. So never be anxious about the next day, for the next day will have its own anxieties. Each day has enough of its own troubles". Therefore, treasure life as a gift from God by doing God’s will now. With determination and effort, you can have genuine joy, peace, and hope. (Romans 15:13) Yes, and then your life can have greater meaning.

The meaning of life is to bring others to Christ. God doesn't need our help, but He does use us. He wants to expand His kingdom. So we as believers are to set an example for those who aren't in hopes that God will use us to help bring them to Him.

EnlightenedSoul

Hello RLFitzer.
The truth of everything, lies inside you. And the meaning of life too. Life is made for us to experience ourselves. To known our very nature. And our nature is of well being, peace, and joyfulness. You are the meaning. Your life is enough. We are here, with this great opportunity to build something. Not a kingdom of gold and silver. But a kingdom of love and harmony. Inside our very own soul. And while you're building it inside you, the world changes. That's the meaning of life to me. But it just applies to me. You gotta found your meaning. And it's singular and unique. It's you. Seek the meaning, but try from the inside out.
My sincere greetings.

Many have asked this question in the past. Some feel the having a great career, money and things will bring meaning or purpose to life. But after acquiring these things many if honest they will say those things are nice but they have not brought real purpose or meaning to life. Our having real meaning and purpose in life is connected to our recognizing the Source of life, our Creator, Jehovah (Psalms 36:9). In fact Jesus said
at Matthew 5:3 that "Happy are those conscious of their spiritual need".
