What causes hiccups?

Report as
My answers support Susan G. Komen for the Cure® What's this?

With me eating or drinking too quickly, and I also get smoking hiccups sometimes strange as it sounds. My mom told me to try 10 small sips of water without taking a breath in between and it has always worked for me.

Hiccups are actually when your diaphragm has spasms. You may get hiccups by eating too quickly or eating too much, an irritation in your stomach or throat, or feeling nervous or excited. All of these can irritate your diaphragm.
