Do you put quotations marks around changed word form

Using information from a source, but not quoting directly. Using "conspiring, contributing, and confusing," but "conspired, contributed & confused" were the words used in the source. How do I punctuate?

If you are making word form editions to a quote in order to clarify ideas, you should use [ ] to indicate where you have made the changes. In your case, you should write ... [conspiring, contributing, and confusing].... The punctuation indicates that you have modified a quote but you are still making reference to it.
