To change the name on his checking account, you need to visit his bank. You will fill out a form and return to them. They will give you information on how you will go about this.

I knew that much, but I was wondering if they would let me because I'm an adult. but he's still a minor, and we aren't sure if it has to be a parent or just someone over eighteen to sign..sorry for the confusion

It is unlikely that they will allow you to be on his checking account because he is a minor and you are not his parent or legal guardian.

Do NOT ... repeat ... do NOT get a dual bank account! Open your own account. A dual account is a disaster waiting to happen.
