What if I don't Trademark my new product word?

What if there was no such thing as the word trellis? I made up the word, advertised it as a thing for climbing plants to grab onto, but never TM'd the word trellis. Could someone come along after the product caught on, TM the word, and make me stop using it?

potentially, yes. you should trademark both the name and product if possible

Wouldn't I TM the word, trellis, and patent the product? Would patenting something so easily copied be a waste of time and money?

What changed that made it now necessary to TM a product, but, as far as I know, no one TM'd - lamp, camera, ball, toaster, paint brush, light bulb, etc.?
