Grammar help: "I was calling ..."

I've mastered grammar(lol), but is "I was calling" ever appropriate?Alternatives?

It is okay if you finish the sentence like "I was calling your father until you shot the gun at the wolf."

In this instance it would be (: Thanks for showing me a different context. But I was wondering using the aforesaid statement when referring to the act of calling someone on the telephone.

Informally during casual conversations. But sounds wrong to me? ( I would like to be correct, despite me not using it formally.)

That's synonymous with "I called," but the context also decides which is better.

"I was calling" means you were in the process of calling
